So my sister wants to make these tote bags for her company, and she says to me, 'Well I found this place that makes reusable, eco-friendly, tote bags.... Of course their price is high, but I mean it's REUSABLE so...'

And I said, 'Um...AREN'T ALL TOTE BAGS REUSABLE?'

Am I missing something here or are people just using the eco-friendly title to make more money? Cause I wanna know what criteria I need to slap on an 'eco-friendly' buzz word to products...

You should make a t-shirt for her with a :carl face: on it. Tell her the t-shirt is reusable.

I'VE SEEN A FEW PRESENTATIONS ON THIS AND I CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.

YES, COMPANIES DO USE THE WORDS ECO-FRIENDLY, GREEN, ORGANIC, ETC IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE MONEY AND MOST, IF NOT ALL, OF THESE WORDS DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A STANDARD DEFINITION.

YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH JUST SAY "THIS IS A GREEN PRODUCT" EVEN IF THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES IT "GREEN" (WHAT THE FUCK IS "GREEN" ANYWAY?) IS THE FACT THAT YOU DUMP YOUR INDUSTRIAL WASTE INTO A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY'S WATER SUPPLY INSTEAD OF THE U.S.'S WATER SUPPLY.

tell me you're not just noticing this

like the "eco-friendly" water bottles

that are less plastic!

hey look it also reduces our raw material costs and increases profit margin, while looking slick to the retard who's actually buying bottled water and be friendly to the environment

So wait, I can choose between saving the earth or my 'A POS'.

I think I need to know what my 'A POS' is before making a decision here.

A lot of that stuff works backwards anyway. You could get a normal cloth bag from anywhere for pretty cheap, probably made out of some kind of plastic or polyester fiber, Or you could get a $40 one made out of organic cotton. Since it's organic they produce a lot less per acre, and so are increasing all resources used that aren't ruled out by the organic process, the standard process is that way because it's efficient. Then, since there's much lower demand for organic cotton, it must be shipped a lot further on average and processed in smaller batches than normal cotton, and the same goes for the production and distribution of the bags. Organic stuff is fine, but people should come to terms with the fact that it is a luxury product you pay more for just like silk sheets, and overall not good for the environment.

It's the same in the short term sense. Factoring in production, life and abandonment damages and expenses a hybrid car costs more and does more damage to the environment than a standard car, and a money or environment concerned consumer would do better to just buy a cheap compact car that used less fuel and actually took far less to produce. But unlike organic food and clothing the Hybrid car is a step in development of technology that could one day be beneficial. Weather or not it contributes enough to be worth it can't be determined yet.

Glancing at the thread, I guess it depends on how green she wants to go.

Well, I think she wants to go as green as she can go without actually spending any more money... And it seems that's very plausible considering that right now I am wearing eco-friendly clothing, typing on my eco-friendly macbook, drinking out of my eco-friendly cup.... The list goes on I suppose....

The thing about those stupid tote bags that she found, is that there are the eco-friendly ones...and then there are the 'organic' ones which cost 4 times as much.
