I've decided I want to purchase a handgun, but I don't know anything about the specifics. I don't even know what kind I would want. Any suggestions? 11/18/2008 5:09:13 PM |

yeah yeah I saw the other thread after posting this one.
I don't understand anything in the other thread anyway, though. I just need to know the basics. 11/18/2008 5:18:29 PM |

before it gets locked up
goto a range and shoot different guns to see if you really want one, and if you'll really be able to use it.
if all things are a go, then go get a permit.. or actually, you might as well apply for one now, takes about a week..
after you've shot guns then you can decide on your own. its like test driving for cars 11/18/2008 6:01:50 PM |

Personal Handgun Safety and Defense Center on Tryon offers an intro to guns course for $60 IIRC, and would give you a lot of good info. You would want to decide the purpose of your gun purchase first. Then you need to decide if you want a revolver or a semi-auto, and then what caliber.
As was stated before, it is best to go and try a lot of different guns, even just to hold them in your hand and decide that you don't like the feel.

depends on what you want it for. If youre going to carry it around in a purse, keep it by the bed, car, etc. you cant make a decision like that until you decide what all you want it for 11/18/2008 6:10:53 PM |

1.) Go shoot at a range. PDHSC has lessons for $75 (includes training, gun rental, ear and eye safety equipment) and then you buy the ammo (a few bucks typically). Or you can rent a .22 pistol, all needed equipment, and 1 box of ammo (100 rounds) for about $35 and shoot on your own. They will tell you how to be safe (you have to take a little, easy test) and how the firearm works
2.) If you decide you want a gun/find one, get a permit. If you are an NC resident, go to your home county and get a permit. The process and cost varies per county I believe. I know that Pamlico county is same-day and $10 (go in, fill out the form, if you background check is good, you get the permit). This is for a handgun purchase permit. Then purchase a handgun.
If you want a concealed carry permit, go to a class (PDHSC offers them for $100). Go to your home county's sheriff's office with the paperwork from the class, and fill out the forms for a CCW permit. It's taking about 4-8 weeks to process CCW permits. Once you have a CCW permit, no purchase permit is required, so go get a gun
This is accurate to the best of my knowledge, and what I gathered from Pamlico County's Sheriff's office. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. ,

If you buy from an individual who is not a dealer, then you don't need a permit. Otherwise, you must apply for one at your local Sheriff's Office, it usually takes a week or two, depending on the county. The best way to decide what gun to buy is first figure out what you're going to use it for. Casual shooter, self-defense, concealed carry, etc. Then do some research, go to a local gun store and ask some questions, what they carry, what's popular for your specific usage. You should also talk to friends and family, they'll help you out. Hope that helps! 11/19/2008 2:20:56 PM |
