In answer to my previous question...

In one of my blogs I posed the question of what the hell is actually going on in the Philippines after I was offered a massage by some guy in a bar. Well, last night I believe I discovered the answer. Apparently, there is some freaky asian shit going on in the Philippines (who would have guessed, right?). Let me explain...

Last night one of the managers from the company I'm visiting took me out and about in downtown Manila. He originally promised to take me to a place called the Hobbit house where all of the waitstaff are dwarves (get it? Hobbit house....full of dwarves....yes, the Philippinos have a great sense of humor). Needless to say, I was very excited about this and was very disappointed when we discovered that the bar had moved to another unknown location (we asked a local dwarf, but he said that he did not know....how could he not know?). Instead we hit up another bar which had a band playing. The band was a group of young Chinese kids, with mohawks and 80's Hair Band hair. They were playing a lot of good stuff, such as The Doors and REM. Quite good I must say.
Anyway, back to the freaky asian shit. So, after three rounds of drinks (totaling about 3 dollars for the both of us combined) we head back to Basha's car. On the way, we decide to go into a local KTV bar (video karoke bar) to make a pit stop. We walk in the door and right at the entrance there are about twenty girls all with numbers on. Not being much of a fan of prostitution (except for the free kind), I was a bit hesitant. After some reassurance from my tour guide, we sit down at a table to get some drinks. The manager/bartender/transvestite (I think) comes and details that their special that evening was unlimited beer for 700 pesos. Great deal right? Well, it gets better. The manager soon describes how we can pay to have a "helper" come and sit and "help" us for 300 pesos an hour and that, if we liked our "helper", we can buy them a juice drink for 250 pesos. Again, not being much of a fan of the idea of paying someone to pretend to like me and tell me how hot I am, I swiftly declined to have any girls. After serving us our drinks the manager then tells us that she likes "Joe" (thats me....American Joe) so she will give us two helpers for free. My friend Basha seemed to be excited about this, so I figured what the hell. We give the manager the go ahead and she brings over two beautiful girls, who then sit beside us and begin to "help" us by pouring our drinks, offering us peanuts, following us to the bathroom to wait outside with a hot towel for when we get out, and generally just help us get drunk. Anything we wanted they were more than happy to "help." This was simply fantastic and last night I discovered the beauty of the asian culture. So I say to you, American girls, you better shape up or ship out. You're getting killed in the asian market and if you're not careful you're going to lose all of your business overseas. So, I expect some better service from now on when I'm at a bar with you.

Anyway, I know what you're thinking, you're thinking "wow Chris, this must have been the best night of your life". Well, it was fun for a while until...the discovery.

While akwardly trying to communicate with this Philippino who doesn't speak a lick of english, but is more than happy to get me beers, my friend Basha nudges me and says "read between the lines". After I ask for clarification, he says, "Have you seen the movie Tootsie?".....

......"What?" I ask, as the stark realization slowly comes to me.

"What, you didn't notice?" he asks surprised.

"No, I didn't fucking notice!" I say a little humiliated. Yes, apparently my "helper" was an illusion created by a lot of makeup and tape. "So, are all the "girls" here like that?" I ask as I'm beginning to wonder about the bar and my tour guide.

"No," he says very nonchalantly, "just yours". "Well, why the hell did I get the dude?" I ask him becoming even more humiliated. He simply shrugs his shoulders and continues talking to his "helper". I turn around to see this "girl" looking at me with a knowing smile as she pours the rest of my beer into my glass.

What the hell is going on in the Philippines?!
