Wow. 5lbs lost per week translates to a daily calorie deficit of 2500 - If you go by the 20lbs/mo in the photo caption. It's 3lbs/wk if you assume 140 is all he lost.

" "'You've got to lose weight,'" Milana remembers them saying. But Marine recruiters were willing to work with him as he began his weight-loss journey in December 2007.

Now, 11 months later, Milana is 140 pounds lighter as he leaves Monday for Parris Island, S.C., to begin boot camp.

where the fuck does "2500 calories a day" come from? "2500" doesn't even occur in the text of the article

5 lbs per week x 3500 calories per pound / 7 days in a week = 2500 calories per day.

But, like I edited - 20lbs/mo isn't right, because then his total weight loss would have been 220lbs; I'm guessing the '20 lbs per month' that they say in the photo caption is probably what he was losing when he first started.

If you average it all out to be 3.18lbs a week, that's still a 1590cal deficit

And I'm sure you feel even better than you look.

You know this guy's self-esteem hasn't yet caught completely up to his new body.

That isn't a lot if he was working out hard everyday. Given his weight, even eating 2500-3000 cals a day could easily result in that type of weight loss the first few months, especially with a good work out. And he probably started to eat right, instead of junk food, so his insulin levels probably got undercontrol and his body became more efficient at burning cals.

I worry about what stories like this make people who don't understand nutrition think about losing weight safely. So many people think if you don't lose massive amounts of weight really fast that's bad, but it's very possible to lose too much too fast if you aren't sure what you're doing.

I've been trying to eat 4000+ calories per day. It's tough going, but I've put on about 15 pounds over the last 2-3 months.

Another 20 pounds and I'll be at my goal. I may have to take things up a notch, however, and start pouring fat into my protein shakes.

My brother lost 20 pounds in two weeks, busting his ass doing construction work for 12 hours a day for the Marines. When his medical came back, he wasn't allowed in, due to living in a fantasy world. He has since regained his muscle and fat.

I want to get so fat that the only way for my body not to implode on itself is to be floated in a tank of water at all times.
