I grew up near there, so I spent a lot of time in Asheville. I love it and miss being in the mountains. It's a neat place with lots of artsy and nature things to do. Both my family and my husband's still live there, so I def. see us moving back one day.

What kind of job is it? Just being nosey

It depends on where you look. There are houses in the 200k range and below and there are houses in the millions in other areas of town.

They say the city hasn't been as affected by the housing bubble as other areas of the country.

A quick google search puts the median price at around 279,000

My friends sister lives out that way, as does a lady who works remotely from home for our company. I haven't heard many complaints other than it's a bit of a drive to get to a big city since Charlotte is closest. But I'm sure there's enough around there to do... as long as you won't miss big cities.

Asheville is "big enough". It's not at all a small-town, or out in the sticks or anything.

I can't think of anything that I can do in Raleigh that I couldn't do in Asheville.

I grew up there. Can't see how anyone wouldn't love it. I miss it.

Look for a place in south asheville - it's just becoming less ghetto and more interesting. Old crappy buildings being turned into music stores and coffee shops... if that's what you're into.

Asheville is jawsome. I grew up there and still visit.

The downtown is at least as lively as Raleigh's, lots of cool little shops, cafes, and whatnot.

The mountains are great, the city is not tiny but not huge. I recommend taking the job, if the job offer still exists 4 months later.

yeah, i looked for engineering jobs there before finding one in Raleigh. They have some software and basic IT stuff, but no real engineering.

Asheville is my #1 place to live in NC.

i asked omar to bttt this thread b/c it looks like i'll be moving out to asheville later this year (like august) for my job.

i'd like to rent a house somewhere in a decent area. from what i can tell:
- west asheville is a popular place for house rentals, but a lot of them are total dumps. some are nice little bungalows that people have restored, but many aren't. seems like the hippies live there.

- downtown and the surrounding areas (like montford, i think) are just rediculously expensive to rent in

- north asheville seems reasonable, and the area off leicester hwy. but most of these houses are a little further out than i'd like to live (my job will be near biltmore ave.)

- south asheville seems hit or miss as far as ghetto or not. apartments/condos seem fine, houses seem like they're crap

then there's the area around biltmore park town square, which looks like it's growing up pretty quick.

i was born and raised in charlotte, then lived in raleigh for 5 years so i'm used to a decent sized town with most of what i need (groceries, gas, beer, job) within a 10 minute drive or so. for those of you who know or live in asheville, where do you think i should check out to live?

^ Try Arden or somewhere in South or Central Asheville if you want to be near your work in Biltmore. There's a lot of fancy places, but also some ghettos around that area (Deaverview).

There are some nice apartments that were just built in the last few years in downtown... I'd guess they're expensive, but you'd definitely be within walking distance of lots of stores.

North Asheville's where I grew up. It's nice... if you can find a place there, I'd recommend it. I wouldn't mind moving back there in a year or two.

I spent a summer up there two years ago, and I'll be spending this summer there. I loved it there...but of course I never really went out except for Saturday nights but just walking down the streets is fun.
