"Gary Khera

Posted: Nov. 20, 2008
Updated: Today at 6:11 p.m.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. β€” A Halifax County man was turned away from a local mission when he refused to remove his turban while trying to make a donation.

When Gary Khera, went with his wife to the Union Mission on Roanoke Avenue to make a donation, a staffer asked him to remove his turban.

"She said, 'Sir, you have to take your turban off. This is the United States,'" Khera recounted. "That made me a little upset," he said. "I am a United States citizen."

Khera, citing his religious beliefs, declined. He is a Sikh with dual U.S. and Indian citizenship. Followers of Sikhism do not cut their hair, and men commonly wear long beards and turbans.

Florence Williams, the mission's in-take director, countered with the facility's policy that requires that men remove head coverings indoors. Rev. Ron Weeks, executive director of the mission, seconded her argument.

β€œHe wanted to become argumentative and I asked him to please leave,” Weeks said.

Khera, offended, left and took his money with him. He said that he and his wife have given to the mission in years past, always by mailing a check. This year, he wanted to see where his donation was going.

The mission building contains a chapel, and employees consider the entire building "the Lord's house," Weeks said. A sign in the lobby outlines the policy against hats or other headwear inside.

"We have policy and he didn't want to abide by it," said Weeks. "He gave the receptionist a bad time and decided to do a vengeance thing because he didn't get his own way. This was nothing to do with the turban, nothing to do with his faith."

Weeks said the mission would welcome Khera's donation if he mailed it or had his wife bring it in.

Khera denied that he was disruptive or argumentative. He asserts that he calmly tried to explain that he was there to give a donation.

Now he'll take his money elsewhere.

"They should not turn away a donation for the needy because they misunderstood someone else's religion," he added.

Weeks said he may consider changing the policy because of the incident.

1. Its not a hat; It's a sign of faith that keeps our uncut hair tied up and also serves as a symbol so that people who may be in need of help can find and identify a Sikh

2. He was making a donation to a church, and teaching his kids about helping his fellow man, no matter what their faith

3. We are not allowed to carry knives in schools, it's called a Kirpan and its a dull blade that serves as a symbol to stand up for the oppressed and to use force when all other means don't work

Open up your mind before making judgments

This is fucked up. You can't come into a church because you wear a turban.

But if you operate a dating/matrimonial site for straight people, you also have to operate it for gay people, otherwise you will be sued in court and lose.

Don't be stupid, if I was going into a mosque/temple/whatever I'd take my shoes off. This whole thing is a non-issue.

but you'd do that if you were going to worship

that isn't really what he was doing. he was going in to make a donation. and i doubt the place to drop off donations is the church sanctuary. i mean maybe it is. but it still seems slightly different than ^

No, if there was a pile of shoes at the door, I'd take them off. I certainly would if there was a sign on the wall or someone asked me to. Or I'd say 'fuck it' and leave. All acceptable actions.

yea i get that but if you are going in to make a donation somewhere it is probably just an administrative office. i don't get the need of taking off a head dress. you aren't worshipping. you aren't in the place of worship. it just doesn't seem analogous to me.

Is it your religious belief that you must wear your shoes?

This is like when an infinitely massive object encounters and infinite force, what happens? Who yields first in their religious beliefs?

It's weird Judaism requires males to cover their heads with Yarmulkas, and Christianity requires males to keep their heads uncovered, but FEMALES to cover their heads. It's like they created their beliefs in order to spite each other, like the whole pigs/cows thing with Hindus and Jews.

This is what i'm thinking. The guy is not a Christian, for something like this, he shouldn't really have to pretend he is one just to give them money.

In any case, if the guy at the Church really said this:
Quote :
"This is the United States,'" Khera recounted. "That made me a little upset," he said. "I am a United States citizen."
"

There is nothing about America that says you can't wear a Turban.

Did they mention Gary runs multiple topless bars and has runins with all the churchs around here over the years? Most Christian pastors aren't exactly fans of the topless bar owner.

No I don't care who donates personally. I was just trying to give some more depth into the story. He has stirred up trouble before to get some attention. And it could also explain why the Reverend didn't want him coming in. Thought it might give more insight into both of their possible motivations.
