"Baghdad opens campaign to kill city's stray dogs

BAGHDAD – Baghdad authorities killed more than 200 stray dogs on Sunday, the opening day of a campaign to cull dog packs roaming the capital that was prompted by a spate of fatal attacks on residents.

Three teams of veterinarians and police officers used poisoned meat and rifles to kill the animals, said Dr. Hassan Chaloub, an official at the veterinary hospital supervising the effort. He said the capital has no dog shelters.

The campaign started Sunday in western Baghdad and will move to the eastern half of the city early next year.

Thirteen people died in August alone in the capital after being attacked by dogs, according to Baghdad's provincial council, which is overseeing the campaign.

People in some neighborhoods have been too frightened to go outside when the dogs are present.

"For many days, people, including me, could not go to work in the morning because of these dogs," said Jinan Abdul-Amir, who lives in the Sadiyah neighborhood in southwest Baghdad. "I came here today to the veterinary hospital to file a complaint."

Under Saddam Hussein, authorities killed stray dogs in the capital almost every year, but the practice ended with his ouster in 2003. Since then, local officials estimate, the number of strays in Baghdad has grown to more than a thousand."

While that picture makes me go AWWW and , it's practical, cost-effective, and a solution to a problem that cannot be ignored.

yea i mean the concern about dogs has been going on for awhile. some of the soldiers took dogs in. i think there is like some kind of group (started here) to rescue some of their homeless dogs.

remember the soldier that wasn't allowed to bring her dog back with her? i think they finally let her.

but yea, definitely a problem.

there's nothing sweet about a dog that's grown up in a war zone. you can't really make a house dog out of an animal like that, but if the touchy feely types get upset by putting them down I guess it makes sense (not that they'll stop shooting them but I understand your pity)

joie clubbed a dog once

but it wasn't a stray. it was our pet beagle....she was innocently playing in the backyard.

when asked about the clubbing, joie simply said "...bitch had it coming to her"

true story

theyll kill all the strays that havent gotten the taste for american flesh

i imagine what theyll do is drag a dead soldier through the streets and the dogs that dont swarm out to feast will be rounded up and killed

People do that with stray cats and dogs around here too. Not a big deal.

"Group urges humane treatment of stray dogs in Iraq

WASHINGTON – An animal rights group is urging Iraqi authorities to find better ways to eliminate stray dogs after 200 of them were killed in Baghdad this week by poisoned meat and rifles.

Humane Society International wants to work with Baghdad officials because their methods to curb the stray dog population are "neither humane nor have been found to provide long-term solutions to the overpopulation program," the group said in a letter dated Wednesday.

"There are humane, effective and well-established alternatives available and we are willing to help the city of Baghdad initiate these programs," the Washington-based group said in the letter to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Baghdad provincial Gov. Hussein al-Tahan and Iraq's ambassador to the U.S., Samir Sumaida'ie.

Baghdad authorities killed more than 200 stray dogs on Sunday, the opening day of a campaign to cull dog packs roaming the capital that was prompted by a spate of fatal attacks on residents. Teams of veterinarians and police officers used poisoned meat and rifles to kill the animals.

In its letter, the group suggests a "holistic approach" to the problem, including surgical spaying and neutering, education on the subject, legislation, dog registration and licensing programs for owned animals, and euthanasia "using humane methods and agents."

Baghdad's provincial council has said the operation aims "to eradicate the diseases transmitted from dogs to human beings."

Thirteen people died in August alone in the capital after being attacked by dogs, according to the council, which is overseeing the campaign."

They should ask PETA to pay for the dogs to be tranquilized and relocated instead.
That way, PETA wouldn't have any money left to run those stupid ad campaigns.
Two birds with one stone, haha.

that picture made me almost cry.

this is such a sad situation for the animals and the people. sadly, shooting them is a more humane death than most animals would get at county shelters.

A thousand doesn't sound like that many more strays in a city the size of Baghdad.

This is probably necessary, but I probably wouldn't be able to do it.

Also, remember all the grief that soldier took for throwing that dog? Where's all of that now?

We have lost pet dogs and livestock to packs of feral dogs over the years, and my father was charged by some once. I like dogs a lot, but I don't mind shooting feral dogs that destroy pets and livestock and spread disease.
