i've always wanted to take up the violin, and now i think i'm going to do it, since i can just borrow my brother's violin...anyone have any experience with any instructors/teachers around here? self-teaching tools?

also, the violin is ~80 years old and could probably stand to be looked at (though it seems to be in great shape)...suggestions for anyone who does this?

take up cello instead, if you have large hands its easier, trust me.

There is, unless hes not there anymore, a violin shop on Hillsborough St. He does quality work but you will pay up the ass for it

^^ actually, my hands aren't exactly huge and my fingers aren't thick...also, i'm pretty dextrous (years of typing, i guess), so i think i might be able to do it...also, a violin is a LOT more portable than a cello

^ baby steps

If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band

I'll sell you a cheap violin - But it'd have to be removed from my wall as decoration first

^^^I dunno, you said "learn the fiddle too" and I read that as learn the fiddle as opposed to the violin.

cello's better anyway, but they're expensive. as far as portability goes, cello isn't that big of a pain to be honest. it's bass where it becomes prohibitively large.

yes, the cost of using the violin is $0, while the cost of using (renting, buying, whatever) a cello is more than $0...that alone is a deciding factor, as i don't need another expensive hobby

plus, i LIKE the violin...it's not just that i'm looking for any stringed instrument, it's that i really want to learn to play the violin in particular...and i don't think you can even remotely equate the violin to the cello in terms of portability...one i can stick in my backpack and the other IS the backpack
