I had to replace a power supply today in my mom's computer. It's an older machine, with an AthlonXP processor in it. Yes, old. Went out and bought a BFG power supply from Best Buy, cause it needed to be fixed on short notice. Get home, plug it in, everything looks ok except for the -5V rail. The hw monitor in the BIOS shows it pulling -62V. Yes, negative sixty-two.
I would figure this is bad and is probably just a dud power supply, but I really can't see how in the hell a power supply would be that far off. Am I missing something obvious here, or should I just return it to BB and try another one? 11/28/2008 7:47:51 AM |

Have you tried using a multimeter?
I'd be inclined to suspect the computer more than the power supply at this point. 11/28/2008 10:11:21 AM |

I'm pretty sure the power supply isn't even physically capable of producing 62 volts. Check it with a multi-meter. The most likely thing is that the BIOS is reporting an incorrect voltage. 11/28/2008 2:02:17 PM |

if you bought a new psu it's likely ATX2.x while a board supporting an athlon xp is atx1.x. I'm guessing the problem lies here as 62V would have melted this computer instantly 11/30/2008 10:05:57 AM |

hahha, that's what I figured, as well. Shouldn't an ATX2.x work on an ATX1.x board? 11/30/2008 2:47:09 PM |
