Let's face it, Despite just being an overall good person (I think that due to his community involvement in the Queen City), Fox has NEVER put together back to back winning seasons. He has two seasons of 11-5 records, but followed one up with a 7-9 mark and the other with an 8-8 campaign. Other than his two 11-5 seasons, he has three 7-9 years and one 8-8. They will have a good year this year, but consistency is something the Panthers aren't known for.
John Gruden, with a win tomorrow, would be the first active NFC South coach to do it.
I like Foxy...but calling him a bust isn't a huge stretch. 11/29/2008 5:56:35 PM |

There aren't that many head coaches in the NFL who are consistently above average. Fox is probably more consistent than your average NFL coach, actually. 11/29/2008 6:00:55 PM |

It's a Herb Sendek deal with Foxy...He's good, just not good enough. He also plays favorites. Dan Morgan and Deshaun Foster should have been out well before this year. 11/29/2008 11:34:30 PM |

if anything, even given his record, hes under-rated. seriously, no one talks about the panthers or Fox, so there is no way he is over-rated. As far as great coach, hes a lot like Bill Cower (who we wanted greatly at State) he runs the ball to the exclusion of all with a D to destroy all.
I Like Fox.

Um he took over a 1-15 team and has been very consistent throughout his career.
He nearly won a super bowl (Kasay ) ,appeared in another NFC Championship, and has us on the verge of making the playoffs yet again.
As far as his coaching style he is a little too methodical at times. The playcalling has often been too conservative. When we have the lead he is all too eager to shut it down and let the offense go three and out everytime praying the defense can hold. When we are behind he will usually wait until the last drive of the game before opening up the offense.
This style tends to make 6-10 teams finish 8-8 and 10-6 teams finish 8-8.
However, as he's proven it is a very effective style in the playoffs where he has beaten several superior opponents. Don't forget he overcame 7 point underdog spreads on the ROAD against very talented teams like the Rams, Eagles, and Bears. He throttled the Giants as underdogs, smoked the Cowboys, and hung with the Patriots.
The only disappointing playoff appearance was against a terrific Seattle team on the road where Delhomme basically played us out of the game on the first two drives and we didn't have anyone healthy left to start at RB.

I wouldn't say he's overrated. He's made some mistakes as coach, but nothing this team hasn't been able to rebound from. Despite his 2 NFC Championship appearances and Super Bowl appearance, he managed to turn around a very mediocre season last year into a good playoff caliber team this year. Also, his handling of the Steve Smith situation and deals to get Jeff Otah in the first round of the draft this past year shows, in my opinion, that he is a good coach and not overrated. 11/30/2008 2:35:32 PM |

the single reason i will say foxie is not overrated because of the respect he gets from his peers. the other coaches and players i hear interviewed that mention him always speak very highly of his skills. i promise they know more than we do. 11/30/2008 2:43:00 PM |

it's pretty hard to coach your way out of a 3 TD deficit, especially when your QB is sucking a fat dick

I am not a Panther's fan, but for your sake I hope Fox stays. He's a really good coach who has gotten a lot out of a football team with mediocre talent at best. I mean if Bill Belichick wants to come coach, by all means fire Fox, but right now he's one of the top coaches in the league. Look what happened when Amato and Sendek left...... now what are you stuck with? 1/11/2009 10:53:41 AM |

Fox is definitely not a bust, but it certainly overrated (at least offensively). He has great players that make plays, which is huge, but his offensive philosophy and game play is suspect and damn near catastrophic most of the damn time.
I am not saying he is not a good coach, but he is overrated.
Now my personal opinion about his style, is that he is just way to conservative and afraid to play for the win.

I got the feeling that Carolina got away from the style that made them so successful during the season. In the first half, Jake had the ball in his hands way too much (I know we had no choice in the 2nd half). I liked the run-heavy offense, but not sure what Fox was thinking by changing that up. 1/12/2009 11:32:35 AM |

I might be wrong about this (I've tried to block most of the game from my memory). This is my recollection of the game (and why we had to abandon the run).
Our second series, when the score was tied, we tried to run in three straight times for the first and couldn't get it. AZ scored their next possession.
Our next possession, Delhomme fumbles on the very first play, AZ recovers and gets a field goal.
Our very next possession, Delhomme is picked off, AZ gets another field goal.
The next series, we go three and out (one running play). AZ gets the punt and goes onto score another TD.
That means we were down 27-7 before anybody really knew what the hell happened. You don't have to abandon the run at that point, but you've got a lot of ground to make up. I think Fox, Davidson, and Jake all sort of went into panic mode (and understandanbly so). It just sucks Jake decided to have his worst game as a pro the one time we NEEDED him to be at his best.1/12/2009 1:13:52 PM |
