Just got new ISP service through Atlantic Broadband. My internet works fine when connecting to my laptop PC. when connecting to my mac nothing happens. it doesn't get DHCP.


any ideas ?

what does networking have to do with my mac not working and my pc connecting fine.

is the MAC address required. i mean it should be pretty straight-forward. i go under system preferences and see "built-in ethernet" selected.

well hopefully it is different than your pc's MAC and as a result, since i imagine that you can only have one MAC address associated with your modem at a time, you will either need a consumer grade router or you can reset the modem when you want to change computers

i think i understand now, but i had no difficulties with the other provider i used. i own a DLINK modem DCM-202. its the same modem i've always used.

i see. after resetting the modem it will allow a computer change. how do i get it to support multiple mac addresses. this is going to be a pain.

you don't, unless you convince your cable provider to increase your CPE MAC count, which they won't do unless you pay them more money.

listen to the other people in this thread and go get a consumer grade router. any one will do.

how in god's name did you ever think you could pass the CCNA exam if you don't know shit like this?
