is this possible? i'm trying to graduate in spring 2010 with my IE degree, and along with that I will have a spanish minor and i will have completed enough courses towards my BUS major to hold a minor in that as well. Can I graduate with BUS as a minor and come back to pursue it as a major the following year? 12/2/2008 12:07:52 PM |

if you want to do that, go ahead and declare a second major, that and talk to an advisor from the business degree/your current advisor about it] 12/2/2008 1:42:47 PM |

lol, wut? that doesn't even make sense.
a minor isn't a degree, you can't graduate without a degree 12/2/2008 3:14:09 PM |

yea, was about to post that and got distracted
^^reading comprehension much?
I wouldn't see why not--it looks like you'd have credit for the classes you've already taken when you come back to do the major. There's gotta be an adviser for the business major you can email though and find out the details for sure though. 12/2/2008 3:26:44 PM |

Why not just take out a second major?
I don't understand the point in graduating, then reapplying again to get another degree. Get both while you are here. Now if you were taking time off, I'd understand but coming back the next year? wat? 12/2/2008 3:29:03 PM |

at least that way if she decided she didn't like it she'd still at least have the minor if she didn't finish the major later on 12/2/2008 3:34:13 PM |

You don't need to reapply. You can graduate and then go to the BUS department and tell them you want in for the fall. They will put you in the program. The problem you may have is getting the classes you want b/c you'll be registering in June/July.
Definitely talk to one of the BUS advisors about it. I'm not sure if you can just finish out this major and then go over into the BUS one without graduating or not, but probably. It would just be a double major thing. 12/2/2008 5:55:48 PM |

Plus I doubt you could count the classes in your minor towards the major you'd later want to get: it'd just be easier to manage both degrees at once.
Though I will say that getting an engineering degree and another degree is easiest to schedule the sooner you know about it (generally, freshman year). And then, for most Franklin and Jefferson scholars, it takes five years. In any case, I would say that it's easiest to get them at the same time.

the university frowns upon readmission for a batchelors after you have already completed one. while you can`t get your diploma until you finish both degrees, if you finish IE first, your advisor can write you a letter stating you have finished all the degree requirements and you are waiting on the second degree to graduate if you need it for a job. 12/3/2008 3:15:35 AM |

Really? Never heard that before. The University gets paid, they don't care. I've known two people who had BA (history and comm) degrees who came back and got a BS (CS and EE) in something completely different and no one said anything to them and the university was more than happy to let them back in. Hell, it was probably easier for them to get enrolled a second time, especially since they had good grades and were in good standing when they graduated.12/3/2008 5:38:06 AM |

Once a minor is completed, the student may not return to complete major in the same area
"A student cannot obtain a minor in their major." This includes obtaining a minor and having it certified before pursuing a major.
It would be wise to go ahead and double major and complete the degree requirements now, unless you are sufficiently happy with a minor in the subject area.

if she does what I did, she can stagger them one semester apart
getting each diploma separately (I also got to go to both ceremonies because of this, too)
but the engineering scholarship people did think I had "graduated" the semester and I had to call some people to get everything straightened out
everything else went rather smoothly though
I didn't have to "reapply" to finish out my last semester of my second degree (I had declared the second major years ago, anyway)

^those two are the same. double major = two degrees. it's just what students like me are referred to since when we log in to packtracks, I have two degree audits. now a DUAL major is different -- I'm pretty sure what that means is something like EE and CPE...degrees that are so close it's like a three courses difference. 12/8/2008 8:17:50 AM |

"Double major" and "dual major" are the same thing. With both, you get two physical degrees. I have a CPE piece of paper that says I have a BS in CPE, and I have an EE piece of paper that says I have a BS in EE. 12/8/2008 7:55:36 PM |

they'll give you the two degrees at NCSU, but not everywhere
for some colleges, double major = one piece of paper
but what I meant was a separate BA and BS that I had to fill separate GERs for (unlike the EE/CPE thing where it's one common set of GERs), since mine split that way
of course you get two pieces of paper
[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 12:31 AM. Reason : it's just managing the extra GER courses that can be a pain]12/9/2008 12:29:32 AM |

yep, I gotta do that, too. Mostly just the CoM is much more strict about WHICH particular humanities courses you take, unlike the CoE which just tells you to pick some from a list. Kinda wish there was a double-major advisor I could go to. The people at the College of Management never answer their emails and are really hard to get in touch with. 12/10/2008 8:08:00 AM |
