I am graduating this semester and about to accept a job at Fort Brag. My current lease isn't up until April so I have some time to look. I am interested in an area with many young professionals like myself and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places nearby. 12/3/2008 11:55:34 PM |

1) Fort Bragg has 2 "g"s
2) There are hardly any concentrations of non-military young professionals in the greater Fayetteville area. I don't mean to dismiss your request so quickly, but the closest thing to "young professionals" you're going to find are single junior officers living in off-post housing. If you're looking for college-educated, attractive, single females, then you'll need to get real familiar with 401 between Fayetteville and Raleigh. 12/4/2008 12:05:52 AM |

I assume its the same outside of Bragg/Fayetteville as well but I think upto a 30 minute commute would be fine as well, though I am not sure there is much between there and Raleigh
Also I guess could you suggest some places to live in the area. I will be moving down there with my girlfriend and I would like to be near some things to do, maybe a bar district or something would be nice

Oh Bragg Blvd is the HEAT when it comes to great action! What a fucking DUMP. If I were you, I'd be looking to move to Fuckway Vagina or maybe Lillington. There are a couple of nice neighborhoods around Fayettenam, but in all reality the whole place is filled with an inordinate number of sleazy used car dealerships, pawn shops, and seedy bars.
Good luck on that one, man. But it's been years since I hit fayetteville on a regular basis, so maybe you'll be a lil luckier. 12/4/2008 8:59:33 AM |

^To be fair, Fayetteville has changed a lot in the last ten years. The titty bar/pawn shop/night club part of town is fairly well isolated these days and the majority of town has grown away from those areas and looks like most of Raleigh.
The rental market is more competitive with the military close by so expect to spend more on rent for the same type apartments/houses. If you are planning on staying for a while, it's probably a better idea to just buy. The housing market here hasn't really been affected by the mortgage meltdown the way a lot of areas have (again, because of the military).
I would much prefer to live in Fayetteville than Fuquay or Lillington, that's for sure.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM. 12/4/2008 9:46:39 AM |

Fuquay is a nice area....LOTS of housing developments and places to eat and stores.
Lillington is home for me. Born and raised there, so of course I'mma suggest that. A couple of nice apartments and townhouse (b/c of Campbell University), but not much to do there as far as bars and things. But I LOVE IT. <3
The mall-side of Fayetteville is all right. Plenty of things to do and several restaurants and stuff. I think when everyone thinks of Fayetteville, they associate it with downtown Bragg Blvd. (which has a lot of run down pawn shops, gas stations, and cheap nasty stripper joints). But the Raeford Rd. and McPherson Church Rd. areas are nice. Just don't stay in that Fairfield Inn...that's where that pregnant woman was found dead.

Don't camp at Gettysburg! A lot of people died there, too. Creepy, I tell you! You better watch out.
Don't live in Cary if you're a woman who runs.
Don't walk behind Pullen Art Center at night. There was a body found there back in the early 2000s.
And whatever you do, don't get a newspaper from that gas station at Centennial and Lake Wheeler. That's where that newspaper delivery gal was murdered, remember? 12/4/2008 11:25:07 AM |

Southern Pines, NO QUESTION. THe city is dang nice, has places to go and has about everything you could possibly need (retail). Its a clean city and the more prosperous place around. Not a bad drive to Bragg, especially if you are on the western side of Bragg. You can hear the bombs drop so I know its close I lived in Pinehurst for a few years and LOVED it. 12/4/2008 12:17:52 PM |

Quote : | "I assume its the same outside of Bragg/Fayetteville as well" | Yes. Spring Lake is mostly ghetto, avoid it if you can. Hope Mills is lower middle class / trailer parks. I lived in both and actually liked Hope Mills, but I lived in one of those neighborhoods where people don't have much, but they take care of what they have. Spring Lake is just trash. Period.
Quote : | "I will be moving down there with my girlfriend and I would like to be near some things to do, maybe a bar district or something would be nice" | This simply doesn't exist. Downtown Fayetteville is currently undergoing a pretty extensive renovation. IF you're going to be there for a while, it might not be a bad idea to find a place to live in downtown (no idea what rent is like because they were just starting apartments when I left). It isn't much now, but if it keeps improving you could get in on the front side of a boom. Depending on how much you make, the Haymont district is nice as well. No bars, just nice homes.
Really, a town like Fayetteville caters to two groups of people: married with children, single and horny with cash. Drive 30 minutes south on 95 and you're in Pembroke. Drive 30 minutes north and you're in Benson. Drive 30 minutes northwest towards Raleigh and you can hang out with Campbell students.
HOWEVER, if you're into swinging, there is a very active swinging subculture there in both the special operations and the aviation community. Oh and you can find lots of blow too.
^ That is actually a very good point that hadn't crossed my mind. You're about as far away as you'd be in Hope Mills or the outskirts of Fayetteville, your commute will be less crowded, and the area is nicer. But again, it aims more for the married or retired crowd than the young crowd.

Actually there are quite a few new neighborhoods out in Hope Mills that are popping up left and right. They're kinda nice. Spring Lake, for the most part is very ghetto, but there are a few nice spots. You may as well avoid trying to rent an apartment in the Fayetteville area. You'll be surrounded by joes and ghetto ass ma'fuckers living 2-6 to a flat. And the shit is expensive, all of the apartment management companies keep up with BAH and adjust their rent so that they can milk every single penny out of the soldiers in the area. Most of the civilians in the area are either business owners who have done well for themselves, contractors, or people working retail/foodservice/dead-end jobs and struggling to get from point A to point B. You might as well get a place in Lillington or Southern Pines and roll with that, because you'll be much better off. You're not going to find a single place around Ft. Bragg with young professionals. The shithole parts of town are being bought out and developed, so hopefully at some point in the future, this place actually may become respectable. Oh, and welcome to Fayetteville. 12/4/2008 1:03:18 PM |

to my first post. There really is no other place that meets your criteria other than Southern Pines (which does have some good bars where younger people actually go). 12/4/2008 1:49:58 PM |

Why don't you try to rent a condo? There are a bunch of them that are near Ft. Bragg that soldiers have bought and are renting while they are deployed. Some of your options are McArthur Landing, Landfall and Woodland Villas. 12/4/2008 4:44:41 PM |

Those are all condos for sure, but there are MUCH nicer areas of Fayetteville than Ramsey St. and damn near out by Raeford. 12/4/2008 4:56:30 PM |

I think the point of this thread is:
1) Find a nice place to live, because the shady areas can get shady quick. 2) You're not going to find a "bar district" unless you count the area off Cliffdale with an Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, Joe's Crab Shack and Hooters. 3) Your neighbors are going to be young single officers, a group of junior enlisted who have pooled their money to live off post, or married couples. 4) Avoid the Merc and Spring Lake. 12/4/2008 6:24:33 PM |

I grew up in the Haymount neighborhood, and wouldn't consider living anywhere else should I move back to Fayetteville (not gonna happen). There are some new lofts downtown, perpetually undergoing construction, but they were somewhere in or over the $200,000 last I heard. There are some good apartments and new condos in the area, as well as houses for rent, though I have no idea what they go for. I do know quite a few young professionals in the area, but they're all locals and "we" generally keep to ourselves (excluding the GI chasers).
Nearby there are a couple bars frequented by the younger crowd, decent parks, good restaurants, and a good amount of intact history thanks in part to decades of slow growth...though this goes unappreciated by even most locals. 12/4/2008 10:50:23 PM |

I've seen lots of nice neighborhoods on the North side (commute to Raleigh area) and in Hope Mills. Some of the new developments near Jack Britt High are 9.5/10. I'd live there in a heartbeat and the price it *right* 12/5/2008 2:52:02 AM |

^^^^yes, that was a joke.
I'd recommend living North of Fayetteville off 401 somewhere or North of Spring Lake on 24 or 87 just to make the drive to Raleigh better, because if you are looking for "young professionals" that's as close are you'll find them.
Or make a few local "young professional" friends and have the "bar district" be your house.
To sum up the thread, IT DOESN'T EXIST. And, if it did exist, it would be less than 1 or 2 miles from a really, really shitty part of town. 12/5/2008 9:42:16 PM |

^^ I feel bad for you if you haven't lived there. You will not like any part of Fayetteville, and will most likely end up leaving there after a year. Its a dump, Its full a of crime, there is hardly any positive growth, its way over populated with gangs, wana be thugs, military assholes.....etc..
Spend a couple weekends there and I guarantee you will not accept that job 12/6/2008 7:55:22 PM |

^How long has it been since you were last in Fayetteville? Now I'm not arguing that for the most part, the city does tend to be a dump, but it's not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. 12/7/2008 10:05:42 AM |

even if I did exaggerate maybe 1 percent of that, I bet even you would agree starting a new life there is not a great idea.
and btw, the last time I was there was when I typed this post
Raleigh is the greatest fucking place on earth

lmao, compared to Fayetteville, it certainly is. Fayetteville isn't all that bad, but unless you're military or you're getting a great job here, there are definitely better places to live. I still say if you're gonna work in fayetteville, live somewhere nearby. 12/7/2008 3:02:41 PM |
