and is about to charge me full price for it. It was returned ON TIME to the correct store. I talked to the manager and he claims they have been trying to call me every day since the due date to tell me about it, but I only got a call once (yesterday) which was 4 days after I returned it from a "000-000-0000" number with a recorded message. What can I do? there's no way in hell I'm shelling out $60 for a game I don't even have in my possession. Can I dispute the charge on my credit card with my credit card company?

Yep. Try going in to the store to talk to them - they'll intentionally ignore you on the phone about shit like this.

I had the same thing happen to me with a movie. Fortunately they were able to find it somewhere in the store. Definitely make sure they've looked for it everywhere. I know that sounds obvious but I wouldn't be that surprised if the 16-year-olds working there told you they looked for it and didn't really do it. 12/6/2008 11:59:29 AM |

I had a collection notice show up at my house for a dvd from blockbuster that I know I had returned. I'm pretty sure I was never called about it either. I called blockbuster and basically said, "I know I returned that movie, why did this notice show up at my house." He said it would be taken care of and it was, never saw another notice, never saw it on my credit. If you're sure you returned it just be persistent and you should be able to get things to work out in your favor. 12/6/2008 12:04:02 PM |

I did talk to him in person, and he said that "someone probably grabbed it out of the return box". Seriously, what the hell? Has anyone here ever worked for Blockbuster? What do I have to do to get these idiots to realize they screwed up? 12/6/2008 12:22:08 PM |

this happened to my mom once for a movie.. they ended up looking up her account and saw that she had paid all late fees without any problem and had even paid for another movie that we actually did lose. because of all that they dropped it and decided she was telling the truth since she had paid so much before without argument.
it took a bit of arguing still but yea, if you haven't been a pain in their ass before they'll probably let you off 12/6/2008 12:28:18 PM |

This too happened to me. I told the guy I had no intention of paying and that they were more than welcome to look at the security cameras (I remembered the exact day and time I dropped it off and who I talked to when I did). They ended up just taking the movie off the account. 12/6/2008 12:55:23 PM |

They tried to pull this shit on me. I rented an old movie (early 70's production) which they only had one copy of. So as they were telling me that they couldn't have made a mistake, I walked to the aisle and sure enough there it was sitting where it was suppose to be. Of course they checked it and it was the one I supposedly never returned. Never have gone back to Blockbuster after that. 12/6/2008 3:07:45 PM |

Had a recent problem like this with Redbox (charge appeared on CC). However, one call later they determined the machine had an error and instantly issued a refund. 12/6/2008 3:43:16 PM |

i too had a recent experience with this mishap. The week before thanksgiving i rented a game and then returned it three days later, on the due date. I got a phone call from the 000-0000 number the day before thanksgiving (so four days following the return) and it was an automated message telling me i had not returned the game and was accruing late fees.
I called back irate and told the guy on the phone that all they had to do was move it from one location to another so i'm sure they still have it since i returned it around noon saturday. he told me to hold and went and looked and sure enough it was right where it should have been.
personally i think that they forget to scan them in some times and therefore it never comes off the person's account even when its tangibly in the store. the calls being automated probably generate as a response of being >4 days late. they really have a piss poor system but probably generate a fair share of revenue from it (especially if a kid was supposed to return it and the parent gets the charge and then pays it assuming their child is just irresponsible. )and therefore don't bother to fix it.
i too will not be going back there. 12/7/2008 1:07:56 PM |

I returned movies to the night drop box at Blockbuster on two different occasions, and they called about not having received a movie and/or had it on my account. I told them when I returned the movie, and they said the drop box had been broken into that night and dropped the charges. This was early 2000s, I think they eventually took away the outdoor drop box for this reason.

Had this happen too. Bitch manager called us up and told us they had been mailing us for months and we had to pay immediately. Of course all their junk mail reaches us fine but their notices never do.
Talked to corporate as we had been customers for many years with no problems. They ended up finding it on the shelf. I told them to suck it and changed to Netflix.
