So i just found out that ncsu is charging me for not graduating on time in the neighborhood of 500 bucks. apparently you start getting charged after 140 hours.

does anyone know if there is a way around this ridiculous policy?

It's in the student handbook. You're considered responsible for knowing the policies outlined in the student handbook.

get that money's worth, homegirl

rent an ipod everyday from the library, get a ticket to every ballgame you can, etc. if they're gonna charge you an extra $500 on top of the $2700, you better make it worth their while

^^ignorance is no excuse. I'm not acting holier than thou, I'm just stating facts.

And there is no loophole. NC State hates students and doesn't give a damn about any of them, including you. If there's a way they can scam another dollar from you, they will, and there's no chance of getting it back.

Hell, the graduate school canceled a payment I made to them, then turned around and threatened to throw out my graduate school application for failure to pay. You know what happened? I had to pay the fee, again, plus a late payment penalty.

Welcome to NC State.

I don't think that's gonna work for me. I have like 40 hours of elective credit that transferred but not as anything I actually need.

And you guys pay 2700 a semester? That's pretty steep. At UNCW it's only around 2200.

It's not just NCSU, it's all public schools in NC that have tuition surcharges.

for real kodiak...i've heard that happening to people all the time.. i know i wasn't the only one

i told textiles that i didn't want to be in their program during orientation, that i wanted to transfer out

but they offered me no help in getting out, and instead, signed me up for classes that i had no business being in and continued to do so the next semester until i finally went over to design school and got them to put the pressure on textiles to begin the process of transfer

best part of tuition surcharge is that it didn't exist when i started, but it sure as hell was there by the time i got out

i also had EXTRA p.e classes that were required when i was a freshman, but were NOT required by the time i was a senior that were nothing but dead weight and accumulating on my lovely TUITION SURCHARGE

big lolz all around nc state

Well by the time I came around Textiles was like, "Talk to the other departments, and then bring us the paperwork." It still took two full semesters, though. My biggest problem was that no other departments wanted help me transfer in. Luckily Textiles referred me to wolfeee to help me out, but I still pretty much landed in English because they were the only ones who weren't dicks about it.

I'm pretty sure when you pay for classes, it gives you how much you're paying per credit hour and tells you how much the surcharge is as well, defaulted at 0% for everyone.

And if you pick up another major, then you can avoid the surcharge. aaronburro did that. Who needs more than 120 credit hours anyway?

The tuition surcharge isn't exactly a secret. When I was in college, it was pretty blatantly displayed on the account balance page in TRACs.

exactly the reason i think people should be able to start college when they want to. or so feel the need.

not right after high school cause that's when you're "supposed to"

society strongly suggests that's when you start but it doesn't dictate it - the system is setup exactly as you say - so you believe the system is setup correctly and just wanted to state it?

in that case - i think we should pay for items in the US in US currency

they exclude summer classes and i got to have at least like 15 or 20 hours from them

^"changed majors"

i think if you are minoring in something it also doesnt count that toward your 140

Important to note "of the student's academic program." I had 172 GPA hours of class time (201 total hours passed) completed when I left, but that was due to getting all the requirements for my two degrees finished.

By those hours, you must have been in two completely different colleges.

i changed majors too and i still didn't have over 150 credit hours. because the general education stuff is pretty much the same for all majors

but i guess if you change and want to stay "full time" for health insurance you need to keep taking random classes?

i'm just confused about how this happens unless you are there for like 8 years (excluding a double major obviously, which CAN be done in under 150 if you do stuff in the same college that is similar. not like SF where obviously you need to take completely different things and no classes overlap)

they're pretty different, especially depending on how each department counts courses (I had to take at least three more sociologies and take two extra semesters of foreign language for my BA, none of that was required for my BS degree)

but like you said, I'm a weird case

Quote :
"How many years were you in school? Did you do summer school?"

Five. I did do one summer (four classes), mostly just so I didn't have 17-18 hours every semester for ever semester after that, even though I probably could've managed it. I never changed either major, it was just a matter of fitting everything in (luckily my English classes were pretty flexible with scheduling).

well some things do count on both

like my science and math requirements for English were obviously filled by classes I needed to take for engineering

similarly, some of my English classes fit into my engineering GER requirements

it's all about planning

weird i switched from bio to political science--pretty different---2 years in and my general education wasn't that messed up

but yea, double majoring definitely easier if you do it in the same school i can't even imagine doing engineering and english. but like political science/philosophy or history combo might be the easiest thing of all time. fyi...especially philosophy because A TON of classes can go for both. if anyone needs an easy double major
