Movie coming out in 2009 about the Acient Mayan doomsday prophecy. Trailer looks pretty cool but I don't know much about the actual prophecy.

I predict the end of the world by a rogue planet crossing paths near ours in 2012, you heard it here first. Either that or Obama gets reelected and somehow that causes all hell to break loose and we all kill each other. 12/10/2008 4:28:00 PM |

i know it's hollywood and all, but for a tidal wave to crest even the smallest mountains in the Himalayas, it would have to be on the order of 5000 feet high and surge a few hundred miles inland

the people who say that the mayan calander simply ends and cycles back cant explain why some of teh most noted predictions also claim that in the year 2012 and sometimes the exact date december 25th the world will either end or will go through a traumatic event
these predictions come from sources such as the bible, nostradamus, ancient greece, and ancient china, also modern science points to some very interesting events in astronomy that day
the ancient china prediction predicts the exact same date
so how do you explain that?

i offer an explination
if you look for something hard enough, you fill find it in one form or another. You can create something out of nothing intentionaly/unintentionaly. The date 2012, decemebr 12 is almost pop culture now, especialy now a movie is coming out. I can take a science fiction novel and make it into a religion or something crazy like that if the mindset or persistance is there.
or it could be the end of the world, either way all I know is when the sun burns up we are all in trouble, HEY NORM! 12/11/2008 10:26:23 PM |

Citations needed, I'll fill in a few (and it's December 21st, not the 25th):
Bible: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."
So I guess I'd have to look for the contradictory verse for that one.
Nostradamus:
Greece:
China:
Astronomy: Winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, summer solstice in the southern hemisphere. Also, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way. Not sure why either of those events would cause the end of the world though. Apparently the sun lined up with the Milky Way some 26,000 years ago and we have a few solstices each year and the world has somehow managed - but they may have never both happened on the same day before I don't see it.

I too just saw the History Channel's documentary on the ancient Mayans and their calendar. Very interesting stuff, although as several professors/scholars noted in it, the calendar doesn't actually end on December 21, 2012, it just marks the end of an era.

What amazes me is that the Mayans were able to predict this celestial event occurring every 26,000 years over 2,000 years ago! In addition to the sun lining up in the center of the Milky Way galaxy, the Earth wobbles on its axis. This is an event that only occurs every 26,000 years and converting their calendar to our own, falls on December 21, 2012. Interesting stuff!1/12/2009 6:18:16 PM |

If the Mayans were so smart, how come they aren't around today? I'm not up to date with my history but weren't the Mayans taken out by Europeans or maybe other Native American civilizations? Why couldn't they predict that? 1/13/2009 9:42:22 AM |

Quote : | "The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar forms the basis for a New Age belief, first forecast by José Argüelles, that a cataclysm will take place on or about December 21, 2012, a forecast that mainstream Mayanist scholars consider a misinterpretation, yet is commonly referenced in pop-culture media as the 2012 problem. [12][13]
"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. in Crystal River, Florida. To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in." [13]" |
