Ok, so I think I'm going to finally break down and buy an ipod. I don't want an iphone, I have a pretty sweet phone (wifi, touch, WinMo). I'm leaning toward the classic because I have all of the features on my phone that make the touch cool. Are there any reasons I should go with the touch instead of the classic? 12/14/2008 9:28:41 AM |

Touch: Cool Classic: Efficient
I have a 5th gen Video iPod (60GB), and I really don't ever want to buy the Touch.
It is a fact that a device with buttons will always be quicker to respond and be more efficient than the same device with touch capability.
Some of the new Sony digicams come with touch screens (no buttons), and I tried one out in a store, and it took an awful amount of time to navigate the menus compared to the older Sony (with buttons) that I had at that time, even though I was familiar with Sony's digicam menus.
Same thing with the iPod.
With my iPod, I am able to navigate faster than the screen can transition, by pressing the scroll wheel multiple times really fast. You can't do that with the Touch. And scrolling as well, much more efficient on the Classic.
Good luck.
P.S. I hope Apple doesn't transition to touch screens only in the future. I hope devices with buttons will always be made, whether cameras, mp3 players, computers, TVs, etc. 12/14/2008 10:30:14 AM |

Just curious about what everyone thought on touch vs classic. Why post in a thread unless you have something to add? 12/14/2008 10:49:22 AM |

I disagree on both counts. It's a pain in the ass to navigate with the thumbstick compared to just being able to touch the option on the camera. And on the iPod, for me, it's a lot easier and quicker to be able to flick the list, or just drag to where I want to be. Especially since Apple stopped using the Synaptics sensor on the classics (the 3rd gen was the last with Synaptics IIRC), whatever they switched to is less precise than my 3G iPod.12/14/2008 10:50:04 AM |

classic. touch doesnt have enough space to be worth it if you have a phone that already has wifi etc. 12/14/2008 10:54:53 AM |

Get the Classic. The only thing the Touch makes you want to do is own an iPhone. Like you said, since you already have a phone that does everything that makes the Touch cool and really just want something to listen to music on, you might as well get the one that gives you more space. 12/14/2008 11:43:31 AM |

The 4th gen was the last one to have the nicer wheel.
WHY THE HELL DID THEY CHANGE IT TO A CRAPPY WHEEL???
My wife has the 4th gen iPod Photo, and the wheel on it is amazing. I got my 5th gen iPod Video just 1-2 months after her, and alas, it had/has the crappy wheel. Seriously, what were they thinking? Couldn't their ENGINEERS tell that it was better as it was???
Still, I would take buttons over a touch screen anyday.
Here is a fact that can't be disputed, and because of which buttons >>>>> touch screen FOREVER:

You can NEVER do that with a touch screen, due to the inherent limitations of a touch screen.12/14/2008 5:27:26 PM |

I had a video ipod for about 2 years, then finally got a touch and it's much faster. It's much easier and faster to navigate using a large 3 inch touch screen than with a small scroll wheel. Plus the app store alone is a reason enough to a get a touch. The games coming out are ridiculous.

I highly doubt that. Your phone doesn't have 1. the app store 2. an incredible browser
Now if you simply want an mp3 player, get the classic. If you want a pda/hand-held gaming system/mp3/media player, then get the touch.
Sure there are games on the ipod classic, but the apps coming out on the iphone/touch are incredible. Not to mention the 2nd gen touch is ~100mhz faster than the 3g iphone.
Also if you're big into reading, stanza (a free app) is amazing. It allows you to download tons of free classics, and allows you to purchase most of the newer books, making the touch a great eBook reader.
The ONLY reason you should get a classic is if you want ALL your music on you at ALL times. I find it's just as easy to switch out my music on mine (16 gig touch). Plus consider this, if you get a touch you can use it to do all your mobile browsing (with a much better browser than your phone), play games, watch media, AND save your battery life on your phone, so when you really need to use a phone, you'll still have all your battery.12/14/2008 10:58:14 PM |
