I would like to monitor the usage of the internet. We have a embarq dsl router that does not allow any logging of any kind. I know I can get a netgear router that will email me logs, but is there a safe software solution that will monitor this for me? 12/16/2008 2:00:50 PM |

what you're asking to do isn't really a simple request
you're going to have to get your hands a little dirty to do anything decent 12/16/2008 2:24:33 PM |

How about taking issue with an employee directly if they have a work performance issue rather than trying to cause problems passive aggressively?
People that do this shit piss me off. 12/16/2008 2:47:13 PM |

no need to set up a monitoring system for just one employee 12/16/2008 2:59:28 PM |

i'm 99% sure my company doesn't monitor usage...which is good, because study after study have shown that being assholes about teh intarweb decreases productivity
unless, of course, it's something like masturbating to porn at work or something...or the employee simply doesn't DO anything all day (kinda like me and tww ) 12/16/2008 3:03:50 PM |

back to the original topic posed. Does anyone have any experience with any monitoring software? 12/16/2008 3:06:40 PM |

I've used a software firewall before called Kerio Winroute...its pretty simple to setup and it logs stuff like that...if we hadn't gone to a hardware firewall we might still be using it] 12/16/2008 3:22:31 PM |

find 4 port hub (not switch) plug in between dsl router + rest of network. Plug comp into hub, fire up wireshark. 12/16/2008 4:23:04 PM |

I've got to have a separate box for pfsense right? I already have a sever in the office that can run the untangle software with no problem. Is there an alternate config for pf? 12/16/2008 11:18:17 PM |

just find a p3/p4 on craigslist for $rhode_island and stick pfsense on there
it doesn't need much at all to run, i promise
i'm just not a fan of running any sort of server on windows platforms, it's complete overkill for what you're doing 12/16/2008 11:41:10 PM |

and maintaining an extra, aging server is a hell of a lot more hassle. 12/17/2008 2:44:02 AM |

^ my sentiments exactly...if my buffalo could run tomato and pfsense, it would be, by far, the greatest consumer wireless router on the planet 12/17/2008 9:40:30 AM |

We use Bluecoat at work.
We also have a full system that scans and records all traffic to and from all computers. It backs it up to a NAS box, so I can look up anybodys IM history, web traffic, e-mails, and every other sort of traffic from the last 3 years. 12/17/2008 9:56:10 AM |

What field do you work in where you need to monitor everyone's internet usage that extreme? Does McDonalds have internet on those registers, lol. I can only imagine how shitty a job it must be. 12/18/2008 8:43:07 AM |

All corporate traffic is monitored heavily, passively.
All corporate traffic is not monitored actively by a live person. 12/18/2008 4:54:07 PM |

^exactly. bluecoat is mostly automated, just alerts the admin(s) when something triggers, basically. It's used in a lot of industries where farting around on the computer/internet could be a liability or compromise security. 12/18/2008 5:12:08 PM |
