I know its a cliched phrase

but who here does it ?

I really can't, being in sales, but I see it every I look

Its one thing if you're a 37 year old woman with no real chance of moving up the corporate ladder

but there's really no reason for guys in their mid 20's to be content with where they are in both title and salary

Its befuddling to me

It's C-level or bust IMO

Lately I've been working just hard enough to avoid academic probation... but that shit needs to change.

i have no room for upwards movement

it makes it hard to be a go-getter

i still strive to do good work though

damnable work ethic

(damn recession meaning i can't look for employment in a real career )

when there are customers here, i do my very best to get them what they need, answer all their questions, be friendly, etc.

when they aren't here, i don't do much of anything

i have way too many things that are personally important to me that take my time and energy to waste time and energy on anything at work that isn't relating to a customer on a one-to-one basis

a job's just a job, and when i go home, i forget it.

[Edited on December 16, 2008 at 3:36 PM. Reason : basically that ^]

I agree. I recently took a better offer at a different company, and I've got friends who are content with jobs that pay 15k less than mine. I don't get it.

perhaps they have less responsibility

and like it that way

if the job/responsibilities/hours/benefits are basically the same, then yes, it's dumb

but money isn't everything

also, i am constantly on the lookout for a new job...i'm CONTENT to stay here, but i'm a money whore and i figure that if i'm going to be bored, i might as well get paid to do it

Its not just about money tho

Its about everything else that career advancement entails

We have 28 year olds here in charge of 45 year olds

Thats where you want to be

it's true that money isn't everything...but all things being equal, it's great to get paid MORE for the same thing, don't you think?

Title doesn't matter as much to me, it's all about the benefits and salary.

V That's real important too, but as a general rule, don't accept something unless it's a safe move.

I know people with titles like Software Developer II and Engineer III that make less than me, lol. Money talks people.

^^ yes

i would make a lot more money if i worked five days a week and bumped up a level of responsibility

but i'd rather sit in a basement studio and make records or go to cd alley and shuffle through bargain bins on that fifth day

they couldn't pay me enough to give up that time

I realized, a few years after finishing school, that I'm not particularly happy with my chosen career. I'm considering going back to school for something I'd be happier with, but in the face of a recession is probably not the best time to do that, especially considering I'd need to take out student loans and find part-time work if I were to go back full-time. But in any instance, I can't in good conscience seek to move up when I know I may be leaving this field soon--plus, where I'm at right now I have great job security, which is a big plus with the economy the way it is. So while I could be making more money elsewhere, for the time being I'm going to sit right here, be content with what I've got, and ride out the storm/figure out what to do with my life.

^^actually a recession is a great time to be learning new skills. pick up a class or two online/nights/weekends and figure out what will make you happy. when things pick up, you'll be ready to go.

I'm saying it would not be good to go back full-time. I'm definitely taking a class each semester (benefits of working for a university) but I've just recently decided that the master's in my current line of work really isn't for me, despite having finished roughly half the coursework.

Working just hard enough not to get fired describes every single one of my technicians.
and they aren't even held accountable when they fuck up.

I do because I don't really need the job that much anymore and I'm getting a new one in a month anyway.
