I got someone who was relying on a WD MyBook NAS for their backups but it sounds like that little piece of crap up and died on them. I was thinking of just getting a beefier NAS to replace it, but an actual fileserver would be preferable so they can centralize some of their IT functions if desired. The want 1TB of storage space (needs to be RAID 1 or 5)...is this doable for $1500ish? What file server models should I be looking at (no i don't want to build this)?
Also if you think a simple NAS is the best solution, what are some suggestions on those? 12/16/2008 4:33:49 PM |

go to dell.com. Buy a real cheap tower server with a warranty.
Stuff with drives off newegg.
total price, probably ~700 12/16/2008 4:35:17 PM |

I'm assuming that's RAID 1 and not 5 (and obviously doesn't include software), but point taken.12/16/2008 5:17:04 PM |
