I have a borderline unhealthy love of/addiction to documentaries... and the Netflix Watch Instantly feature is my dealer.

I am now watching Helvetica. A movie about fonts. Actually a movie about ONE font

"Helvetica was a real step from the 19th century type, more machine, doing away with hand made, very neutral, the meaning is in the context of the text itself and not the typeface"

most fonts start with lowercase h and then o

^^^^ I think one thing is Helvetica has horizonal end lines whereas Aerial's are sloped. Fuck I dont know

oh shit! I am a specialist now!
Quote :
"Monotype's Arial, designed in 1982, while different from Helvetica in some few details, has identical character widths, and is indistinguishable by most non-specialists. The capital letters C, G, and R, as well as the lowercase letters a, e, r, and t, are useful for quickly distinguishing Arial and Helvetica.[4] Differences include:

* Helvetica's strokes are typically cut either horizontally or vertically. This is especially visible in the t, r, and C. Arial employs slanted stroke cuts.
* Helvetica's G has a well-defined spur; Arial does not.
* The tails of the R glyphs and the a glyphs are different.

Microsoft made a lot of knockoff fonts for windows because they didn't want to license existing fonts. It's a sordid history

this is a cool doc

we watched it in my graphic design course with the lesbian that is my best friend / one true homo/hetero-lifemate/love (not to be confused with my girlfriend who is different enough from me that I might create a viable relationship with her)

Helvetica is the preferred font of the MTA
I am very drunk and I have just spent more than 2 hours navigating the MTA and exploring the Helvetica font

p.s. do you have the roku box? if not, don't get it - you won't be able to stop watching.

also, for the record, my favorite fonts are from the Myriad and Frutiger families

hasn't it always been and on and off? it was big until the corporations started using it, then it was no longer cool, but now it's trendy again.

this will now be the official Jaybee1200 Documentary Thread

tonight, I watched:

Confessions of a Superhero

http://www.therealsuperhero.com/

From website:
CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERHERO is a feature length documentary that chronicles the lives of three mortal men and one woman who make their living working as superhero characters on Hollywood Boulevard.  This deeply personal look into their daily routines reveals their hardships and triumphs as they pursue and achieve their own kind of fame.  The Hulk sold his Super Nintendo for a bus ticket to LA; Wonder Woman was a mid-western homecoming queen; Batman struggles with his anger, while Superman’s psyche is consumed by the Man of Steel.  Although the Walk of Fame is right beneath their feet, their own paths to stardom prove to be long, hard climbs.

Good stuff. Superman is just an obsessive fan, bit of a weirdo, but seems harmless, the Hulk sounds slow, but overall a cool guy (from NC), Wonder Woman is pretty damn hot (from outside of Knoxville) and definitely the most "normal" out of the group, but Batman is fucking psycho, that guy will end up shooting up a McDonalds or something before he dies.

Entertaining stuff, but I have a fascination with dorks/excessive fans... so if you loved Trekkies or American Movie you will love it

tonight, Girl 27, about a rape cover up at MGM in 1937. I love stories about Hollywood back then, and how things werent at all like they seemed and how fucked up things happened back then just as they do now even though everyone claims that things have gone to hell now
