What do you wear? I have an underarmor shirt or two, but that shit is expensive.

Is there something comparable available? I also have a few Nike dri-fit pieces that work ok, although not as well as the UA stuff.

I know it's not a fashion contest, but I sweat like a stuck pig, and mitigating that makes my overall experience better.

I could give a shit what the stuff looks like, it goes under a t-shirt for me.

I have 2 under armor shirts that I alternate between (not the skin-tight variety), and then either mesh shorts or nylon pants depending on if its cold or not.

I alternate between under armor shirts and hanes A-shirts. I sweat like crazy, and underarmor heat gear sheds water remarkably well.

I also have some shirts that came for free with my online protein orders from Bodybuilding.com and DPSnutrition.com. I don't care about destroying them, and they're cut well for me.

Yeah, the heat gear is what I have - it makes all the difference between whether or not I have a sopping wet shirt (GROSS) at the end of my workout.

What I'm wondering is if there's a generic-o heat gear type shirt that anyone has experience with. I mean $25 isn't a lot, but if I can get the same performance for cheaper, why not?

underarmor + tshirt over it = I can wear that shirt again once i get out of the steam room

just a tshirt = I need to bring a second tshirt, because I might as well have taken the first and run it under the faucet

t-shirt and shorts.

I'm not spending money on Under Armor. Sweat is good, if I work out and I'm sweaty, it means I worked out. I dunno, I just never got grossed out by what is a perfectly normal activity.

I don't understand how they can have Ralph Friedgen as a spokesperson when he doesn't even fit into any of their product line.

yep, old t-shirts and old/cheap gym shorts. I ruin my gym clothes with chalk, sweat, and having the barbell resting/rubbing them. I don't mind putting money into a good pair of flat soled shoes, weightlifting shoes and running shoes/crosstrainers, though.

nothing elitist about it. Me buying under armour would be rediculous. Russel shorts are what(?), 7-8 on sale.... UA, is what....?

Though I think they are a bit silly for the gym, for cheap moisture wicking UA type junk, I think champion makes a knock off available at Target on the cheap. No clue how it holds up, though.

I think that underarmor would be a little more resilient than old t-shirts. Shorts I wouldn't know about, I don't wear UA shorts.

^^^and in all honesty, they probably are pointless for most folks... but most people don't sweat like I do, either.

well, how often do you have to throw out a shirt? answering the question of which is more economical for you would depend on how many old shirts you had that you wouldn't mind throwing away or destroying.

I don't have many older shirts, plus when I work out in a regular shirt, it gets pretty groady from deoderant and the like. UA shirts hold up pretty well and I can wear the same shirt multiple trips to the gym. It helps that I don't sweat that much when working out, although when I do cardio that's another story entirely...

And I'm pretty sure that I've never seen many people do lifts that would really fuck up some shorts. You have the cleans category, dead lifts...what are you doing to your shorts? lol

hang cleans, hang snatches, all dead varations

cleans/snatches from the ground shouldn't really screw your shorts up much, unless you are lifting w/ regular plates rather than bumpers (no dropping the bar)

I wear those Adidas mesh shirts. Way more breathable and faster drying than cotton t-shirts. Not skin tight like those Under Armor shirts.

although the gf has dragged me into lulu a couple times and ive picked up some of their shirts

them things dont weigh a thing, very light and free feeling

pricey and its a "girly" brand, but then again, im going for performance, not fashion

What up Nick.

Honestly, the UA and Nike stuff lasts a pretty long time. I've also had good luck with Adidas stuff. If you have 3-4 shirts you can rotate through and some pairs of shorts you should be fine. I like the Nike Fit stuff, UA that isn't skin tight. Adidas makes good shorts that have a compression short lining, they're my standard for running in.

really, those shirts that ncsu gives you when you take a gym course are pretty awesome (they're not cotton, at least not all the way...it's a poly blend, and they're great for working out in)

that and some mesh shorts

UA and Dri-fit are where its at.

There's a reason that stuff is expensive. It may be hard to believe, but that fabric is insanely expensive compared to regular cotton or polyester. I've tried buying it a couple of times in a ream; even in large quantities it costs 5-10 times what heavyweight cotton does (which should tell you a little bit about how much a ripoff tshirts are).

Material cost on an underarmour shirt is ~4-5 dollars, whereas cotton costs about 75 cents. If you want to pay less, look for defect shirts at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, sierratradingpost and similar stores/sites.

Honestly I wouldn't buy cheaper off-brands. The material wont work nearly as well, and it wont last nearly as long.

Old t-shirt, basketball shorts or some other type of lightweight shorts (swin trunks even).

That is all a man really needs to work out in the gym besides the obvious shoes, socks, and underwear.

These dudes that wear all this under armor shit and head bands and wrist bands need to get their dicks kicked to make sure they are a man.

looking like a bum doesn't make you any more of a man than the person who spends a little bit more money on quality workout apparel.

On another note, I really wish I could squat barefoot without worrying about having my feet rot away from the shit growing on the gym floor. I currently wear wrestling shoes on leg day, but even that doesn't feel as natural as I would imagine lifting barefoot would.

I did buy some more of those Underarmor heat gear shirts this morning from soccer.com for $13

the best pair of shorts i own is a pair of dri-fit nike soccer shorts, they are like swimming trunks and have the liner sewn in. The second best pair i own is a pair of adidas soccer ones - predators to be exact. I spent I think $30 on each pair, but they're both awesome. The nike's i've had for at least 3 years now and they still look brand new. The adidas I just bought this summer, and have had no problems with.

i think my big problem is finding something I like, and then trying to buy more of the same later only to find out that the new stuff fits different or performs differently.

Quote :

while my intent is not to "look good at the gym" - especially since when I go, there's just myself, my friend, and one or two other people max in there - I don't know that i agree with this statement

there's no harm in looking the part at all

you don't look down on a dude who shows up at the courts to ball with a pistons jersey on, you don't look down on a dude who shows up on a soccer field wearing a soccer jersey, long socks, and shin guards, and you don;t look down on a dude who show up to a baseball game with a glove...
so why would you think that someone wearing workout clothes to the gym would be there for anything but working out?

I mean, what is the point of the product if its not inherently to perform the tasks for which it was created?

For the gym, cheap cotton russell shorts and plain t-shirts not work just as well? What is the point of moisture wiking or heat guard stuff for indoor gym use? Were the cheap shorts and plain t-shirts not also designed for athletic use (they were).............
