Worth it?You can buy them for 500-600 bucks, or you can buy a kit to build one yourself. When does one of these become worth it?

It's always worth it.

When is one of these not worth it?

When you dont drink every night.Anyone have one they use regularly?

I built one when I lived in Cary and had a big basement. Bought a full sized refrigerator off of a guy for $75, bought the kit for like $150 or so if I remember correctly. Only took about 20 minutes to build, and was really easy. Just drilled a hole in the front of the fridge and atatched the hardware. It was pretty sweet because you could keep the glasses in the freezer part. I always struggled with the pressure though, which made it a pain in the ass to use. But then again, I didn't really put that much research into how to get it right.

remember, keg beer isn't pasteurizedif you cant finish it within a few weeks of tapping it, dont do it.i built a pony kegerator on the cheap while in school.kit online for like $100, co2 tank/gas from a welding shop, craigslist mini chest fridge
12/20/2008 8:26:52 PM
the kit I bought came with the CO2 tank, just had to get it filled

probably why the price difference it was cheaper at the time to get the tank from a welding shop than to order it from the site that sold the kitsdont know if that still holds, make some calls

But to answer the question, it was definitely worth it because i had 2 roommates. 3 guys drinking beer every night made it well worth it.

i think it is worth it. i had one of the ready made ones from best buy and then sold it. at the time i wasn't using it. a few months ago my mom moved and i got a refrigerator/freezer for free so i built a new one. do i use it much, no. but if you know enough people or if you drink enough it will pay for itself

They're cool to have. But when drinking beer becomes a full-time job at home because you have to finish the keg before it turns is a bit excessive.
12/20/2008 9:50:44 PM
oh man i wish i could have guinness on tap at my house. i'd never leave.
12/20/2008 9:53:26 PM
There are 165 beers in a keg, roughly. I am sure if you keep it pressurized and cold, you could make a keg last about a month. Do the math to figure out if it is worth it.
12/20/2008 9:55:28 PM
I looked up how long keg beer lasts. From what I remember it boils down to ~1.5-2.5 beers a day every day for a while.Awesome for gatherings. But I do not drink beer enough really. Just like good beer.
12/20/2008 9:57:58 PM
yeah, like i said, it is a lot easier to justify having one if you have a couple roommates. but it definitely will make you drink more often, having cold beer on tap whenever you want it.

if u turn up the pressure to 11-12 psi, you can get a keg to last a lot longer. i have a carolina brewing company spring bock that lasted and stayed good for 7 months. it's all relative. higher gravity also tends to last longer from my experience. i have had a store bought kegerator for about 5 years now.

And don't stress the added electricity cost of another fridge. As long as you get a fridge that was made this century, they only use around 200-700 watts. To ensure you stay on the low end, just turn off the freezer part.

I had one for a while and ended up selling it to a friend. It was mostly too hard to keep properly clean, but fun for a while.
