So I bought me sister and her husband a book called, "A Bridge to the Future." You can buy it at the campus book store and it has lots of pictures of campus and tells the history of NC State University. A photo from the 1980's that is in the book shows the theater that is now Hillsborough Street Textbooks. The now playing sign said, "John Holmes-The Senators Daughter." I didn't realize they showed porn back in the day.

there was actually a club on hillsborough st. It was called Kelly's. Fulls of asians.

Anyway, one night, my friend Norman made me go with him to this club. He said "watch, there's going to be a fight tonight".
About 45 minutes after getting there....there was this fight. Pretty entertaining.

i'm not sure the raleigh government has ever been really interested in revitalization...at least someone has perpetually stalled talks to begin anything substantial (see the hillsborough thread in the lounge)...

the university has made it hard, too, with parent and neighborhood pressure to nix encouragement to discourage drinking

i imagine fault lies on all sides, both with people who want "less urbanization" (i.e. block known developers who want to build up and engage in parking for cash, with a predatory notion) and people who like "puritanical thought" (i.e. less bars, loud kids, smoking)

Oh hell, I remember way back when the Big Bad Wolf was The Big Easy. A friend owned it. '93-'94? somewhere in there. Back in the heyday of the Five-O, which was where I spent a LOT of time.

As you can probably see in the comparison pictures, that is actually the original marquee. They replaced the neon when the renovated the place to become HST a few years ago and added the signage (it used to be tricolor red/blue/white neon, IIRC, while McD's closed before I came to Raleigh I saw the original neon lit up a couple times when they were starting the renovations)

I was there when they opened that McDonald's. It was one of several themed restaurants that McDonald's opened to celebrate one of their anniversaries - I think the 30th. There was a small parade with classic cars from the '50s and I believe the NCSU band. Tbe big draw was Wolfman Jack was there in person. I still have his autograph from that day. I think I took photos, but I would really have to search for them.
