I'd consider myself an intermediate hiker. I used to hike/camp once a month back in my boy scout days. I'm good with orienting a map and i'll have my blackberry w/ gps in case shit goes down and I get lost. I'm looking for a good overnight trail - something I could start around noon on new years eve, camp overnight, and get back home sometime on new years. I'll be with two of my friends who have little experience hiking but we're all in good shape. I was considering stone mountain because that was my favorite spot back in the day but it looks like it's going to be snowing on new years and the rock face is pretty dangerous when slick. I considered linville gorge as well but i've never been there and my Dad says it would be too dangerous without an experienced companion. What say ye, tww?

A poll in USA Today said 51% of americans are saying in their "PJ's or Sweats" with another 4% in their "robe".

How lame that more than 1 in 2 Americans has no ambition to do anything but sit on their ass and likely watch lame TV shows going into the new year. Those who will be hooking up with a hot female all night are marginally excused from my criticism only if due to location they do not have the social network locally to have been invited out.

I've done the party thing for the past several years and it's getting old. Thanks to the new diet I can't drink alcohol (maybe a little bit of wine) and being the sober guy at a new years party is terrible. I wouldn't be hooking up because I grew up and don't do one night stands anymore and i'm currently single. I figured I might as well do something cool with my best friends before I go into the service. Plus this is a good opportunity to help with weight loss and meet my goal by jan5.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

I, too, am looking for a place to hike and camp around the New Year. I am looking to hike around 18-20 miles the first day, camp overnight, then hike 18-20 miles back.

Any suggestions?

I give this thread an A for originality though hiking for new years. Better than just sitting around watching the ball drop on CBS in your living room. This sounds fun actually.

Where do u meet women though if going out is not your cup of tea anymore? It'd be awesome if u had a girl on the trail w/ ya

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare, but I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'"

i always fall for these things

^lol, gg.

^^I mean I still go out to parties/bars from time to time but I don't make it my life goal to find someone to spend the night with. I don't feel like I necessarily missed out if I didn't go to a new years party. I'm not 12 anymore so I don't think having a massive hangover is "cool" so i'm not worried about missing the national hangover day celebrations either.

Roan Mountain...Id hit up carvers gap and go north...youll have some good shelters to stay at and there are "the humps" which are bald mountains with the 360 view, yo. (6 miles to overmountain shelter and then the next 3 miles will go over the balds)

http://www.tennessee.gov/environment/parks/RoanMtn/

you can maybe try the smokies and get on at newfound gap, head south and hit up clingmans dome...somethin like 40 ft shy of Mt mitchel (supposed to be great views...i never saw them though. It was cloudy and snowy). Only thing is that you have to reserve shelters, which have fire places....they dont allow camping. (about an 11 mile hike one way)

i say you should get on out there...just prepare...you've got boy scout experience....overly prepare is like rule number 1

Thanks! You're one of the people I was hoping would catch this thread.

I'm not really looking for shelters, I plan on bringing tents and want to barebones it. I feel almost like i'm cheating when I sleep in structures

Roan mountain then...strictly for the balds...if it's going to be cloudy, then id find somethin else

Good camping on roan.. balds and in the trees

hmmm...Unaka mountain is a good one....might not say much for views, but at the top, there is an alpine forest with carpet of needles...~ 6 miles from nearest access point

40 degree high and 21mph winds

I'll dress warmly. Looks like Roan mountain it is, should be clear enough to enjoy a good view. Who would be cheaper for the misc. camping equipment I need to pick up, REI or Bass Pro?

Thanks for the suggestion, it was a pretty good hike. We started on carvers gap and hiked up roan mountain; we would have eaten lunch in the shelter but there were some people in there smoking up some big ones . Took the side trail to the bluff then went back down. From there we hiked up the balds (which were a bitch man, you didn't tell me the top of those things were damn near vertical) and stayed the night by overmountain. Hiked back to the car the next morning.

I can barely walk right now i'm so sore

Oh yeah, I really wish I would have bought goggles. While hiking back down the balds I had to stop a few times because my eyeballs were so cold I could barely see. That was a bitch.
