Go fucking figure....
So much for the pooor black boy who was bullied by the whites and left to no choice but to beat the shit out of a white kid in self defense nearly to death with his 4 buddies.
Good Going bud.... You weazeled your way out of an attempted murder charge by all the stupid protesters only to prove that you truly are nothing but a thug after getting caught trying to steal clothes from a store.
Quote : | "Bell's Christmas Eve arrest came after security guards at the shopping center received a late-afternoon alert that Bell and a male friend were in a menswear section of Dillard's, where they were seen stuffing clothing into a Dillard's bag, according to the investigative report.
Once spotted, the men split up, police said. Bell, chased by security guards, ran from the store to a parking lot, where he tried to hide under a car, Davis said. As a store security officer tried to pull Bell out, "Bell swung his arms wildly" and hit the guard with his elbow, the report says. Davis said the guard was hit in the face." |
I'm sure the protesters will return claiming Michael was framed by these charges by the evil white man.

Noooo 10'000's of blacks rallied the streets of this LA to bitch about racism and white people holding blacks down. Somehow excusing Mychel Bell and Co. from nearly beating a kid to death bc of the mean white people. Even though he had 3 prior assault charges against him surely he did not deserve an attempt murder charge since he was merely "self-defending" himself.
I hope every protester feels like an idiot. 12/30/2008 9:08:22 PM |

^Dude, from what I've read, three of those kids have managed to do quite well, despite massive amounts of media scrutiny.
I dunno. It just seems really harsh to write kids off, even the "little thugs" and the "racist white trash idiots."
I understand getting caught up in the heat of the moment and saying silly shit, but it's been a while since the incident. Since then, Bell's father and mother have both been charged with assault in separate incidents, and the kid has shot himself. I'm more likely to attribute his behavior to stress, mental illness, teenage dumbassery, etc...than to let the racist in me chalk him up to a "little thug."

^^^You gotta understand that I come at this subject from a different place than you. I grew up with most of the advantages and made all the mistakes (short of actually killing someone). So I'm very sympathetic to other kids who fuck up, especially those who don't get most of the advantages like I did.
I mean, I'm not even coming at this with racial rhetoric. I haven't busted out shit about the struggles of young black males and the failure of society and public education and the community and his parents and how stifling life in the ghetto can be and the media's influence and blah, blah, blah...
I'm saying he's a kid who just shot himself in the stomach because he was that upset about getting caught shoplifting and probably lots of other stuff that's not going right. That doesn't seem like a "little thug" to me. I'm not ready to lock him up.
I'm biased as fuck for sure. If this kid got on TV and talked shit about fat people or if he played sports for Chapel Hill or if he was a hardcore conservative or if he disliked pug puppies, I would be so ready to talk shit. But he's just a kid, and I kinda feel sorry for him. Y'all gonna hate, I know, but whatever...

Statistically, men who want to die shoot themselves in the head. Women shoot themselves in the heart.

Like Hur said though, at what point do you acknowledge someone's personal responsibility, regardless of their advantages or other circumstances?
Sure, there are influences and advantages, but sometimes you gotta call a bad apple for what it is. I'm not speaking to this instance in particular, just in general.12/31/2008 12:08:59 PM |

Stealing clothes and shooting yourself doesn't really prove this in our legal system.
This case will be decided however the legal system sees fit, just as the previous case was. Justice has been served, and will continue to be served.12/31/2008 1:44:49 PM |

^^,^^^I think my view leaves plenty of room for personal responsibility. You guys act like people do things for no reason, like there's no explanation for our behavior...they just do things cause they're bad and that's it. It's possible for someone to accept responsibility for their actions while simultaneously maintaining that there were circumstances outside of their control, that they're not just bad.
I'm not sure exactly how much emphasis I would place on those circumstances that are outside our control, but I can say for sure that I cut lots of slack for young people (folks younger than 25 or 26). I definitely support alternatives to prison for people who commit crimes before that age.
And I think people that are truly "bad apples" are so rare and so awful that I'd just assume not waste my time thinking about them. 12/31/2008 4:42:08 PM |

^ A lot of people DO need someone to constantly remind them what's right and what's wrong, that's why religion is so popular.
You're making the very common mistake of thinking everyone else's brain works like yours and has your same worldview, when that's not true.
Bell is obviously going to have to face the consequences of his actions now though.
The fact that he beat someone's ass that was insulting him is not really related, from anything i've seen, to him being a thief. Especially if the other kids are doing better than him. 12/31/2008 6:49:39 PM |

Quote : | "It's possible for someone to accept responsibility for their actions while simultaneously maintaining that there were circumstances outside of their control, that they're not just bad." | I think what a lot of people find frustrating, myself included, is that there is the perception of a cultural shift away from personal responsibility and towards the collectivization of guilt. This is as present in the Jena case as it is in the government bailout of the banking and auto industries.
In the specific case of the apparent disintegration of large swathes of black society over the last 30 years, while there are huge factors such as the war on drugs, there has to be an acceptance within rural and urban ghettos that help isn't going to come from the outside, it isn't going to come from race pimps like Jesse Jackson, it is going to require some real leadership from within.
I sincerely hope that Obama can provide some motivation for this but the fact of the matter is that his story isn't the story of most black Americans. So who knows?1/1/2009 6:01:11 PM |

this doesnt justify him stealing clothes at all. not one bit. Id like to see what kind of circumstances were out of his control that caused him to steal. Sure the obvious ones I see you are picking are bad parenting or just bad role models in general. But stealing is a pretty basic no-no in America. If his parents did not teach him that, then its kind of 'oh well'; ignorance of one of the most basic laws doesn't save him from personal responsibility in this case imo.1/8/2009 9:05:57 AM |

I feel bad for this kid...now. A lot of kids steal and get caught. It's not that big of a deal at his age. And whether or not he actually intended to die, he must have been in a pretty dark place to shoot himself at all, regardless of the wimpy caliber.
However, I do feel that the initial protesting of the attempted murder charges were not based upon sincere outrage at the seriousness of the charges but rather at the fact that Bell and company acted out because they felt racially intimidated. Certainly, the asshole prosecutor didn't help either. But to me, all the protesters did was signal to everyone else that they believe that violence is the answer to racial intimidation. It didn't seem to me that they were pressing for assault charges, they were pressing for no charges. That's what I disliked about the whole crying out over the charges.
And again, I probably don't know enough about the entire situation to be credible. But stealing is what teens do for fun. Sure it's wrong, but I believe that for every one bad apple, there are thousands who just made a mistake.
