What do you guys think? I'm pretty interested to know. I;m reading this, I dunno, "self-help" book or whatever you want to call it on the subconscious. This doctor claims that anything you want can be given to you if you convince your subconscious you already have it, much like faith/prayer. This book seems a little tad bit extreme but I think he has a point. The only reason I halfway believe it is because I can tell my body before I go to bed several times to be up at a certain time and I will be awake at that time. And the placebo effect.
So this book is saying anything you want you can get. The subconscious controls everything in the body and it's goal is self-preservation. It does not know right from wrong, truth from false, what the conscious translates as truth will become embedded in the subconscious. So he's saying that someone who has cancer can cure themselves by repeating something like "I am in perfect health, my body is the way it should be run as I believe in the infinite wisdom of my subconscious" several times a day for several months. On the same point he's saying one can get wealth, prosperity, happiness, and joy all form convincing their subconscious it's true.
It makes sense but I don't know if it really can go as far as he wants us to believe. What do you think? If I repeat to myself "I live on the coast and make a ton of money doing what I love" is it going to fall into my lap like this guys says it will? 1/2/2009 6:30:38 PM |

are you reading the secret?
if you're going to repeat a positive message to yourself be more specific
which coast? how much is a ton of money? what is doing what you love?
saying what you want out loud, in addition to writing it down and telling people what you want will automatically help you get closer to your goals for several reasons
1) you are constantly reminding yourself of your goals 2) are you sharing your goals with others 3) you feel more responsible for your actions related to the goals because you are accountable for them (this is really the key.. no one wants to publicize the marathon they are running in 6 months only to have to admit 6 months later that they never even started training for it)
its not QUITE the power of your subconscious, it more about specifying your goals, publicizing them and taking opportunities that get to closer to them
honestly, its a very basic and reliable way to get what you want, try it with something small and you'll see

Yeah it does work in small ways. I have specifics I just didn't share them on tdub. I agree that there are several variable that make repeating something come true eventually and think that's better message than what this book is trying to push across, and more believable. I was just wondering if anyone thought this could be real, or thoughts on it period.
He said it was very akin to a prayer and religion but replace prayer with a repetitive positive rant to oneself and religion with faith in the subconscious.
Just a weird concept to me and I'm trying to figure it out if I should give it a shot "in small measures" or regard it as phooey. 1/2/2009 6:56:35 PM |

if it was true, prayer groups would always work
a positive mindset can make you a happier person and more enjoyable to be around but its not going to cure cancer or make you rich 1/2/2009 7:04:00 PM |

Scott Adams, the writer/creator of Dilbert actually has believed in something like this for a long time. He writes his items down, but it's the same concept.
It's called "Affirmations"

I don't think it's THAT far fetched, I think repeating a message to yourself could help in situations. 1/3/2009 5:45:41 PM |

Come on guys, you're not being fair! Amazing stuff will only happen when you believe hard enough. If you're unable to fly or can't make $1 million appear out of thin air, you just didn't want it hard enough.

this is either "The Secret", or a rip-off of it. It's called The "Law" of Attraction.
and it's shit. Pure and utter bullshit.
Really. I hope you didnt give anybody any money for this book.
It's one thing to claim that positive thinking can lead to good results, or that thinking about lucky things will "give" you good luck. This is because when you think positively and have a good attitude, you're probably more likely to sieze good opportunities and be more optimistic.
But this retarded "theory" that simply thinking about something and it will come true is just ridiculousness.
further reading. this is a fair assessment of this movement http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2007/02/the_secret.html http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2007/02/the_law_of_attr.html http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2007/03/oprah_secret.html

That's what I was pulling from the book generally speaking but I'm halfway through and he's saying it cures cancer, promotes healing, yadda yadda.. all the while not listing sources
Just curious if it could have any inkling of truth, like when I mentioned waking up at a certain time because you repeated it over and over which I've been able to do.1/3/2009 9:30:05 PM |

So let me get this straight...
picking up and purchasing a book at random and reading half of it (before deciding it was complete bullshit that you wasted moments of your life reading any of it) saves you time? 1/3/2009 9:50:55 PM |
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
Yes because the number of times it's done really well for me far outweighs two negative times. Even then I take away from the book what I can. 1/3/2009 9:55:57 PM |

if this is all that was required a lot more people would be successful - instead the people reading self help books typically remain in the constant state that they were in before they picked up the book 1/5/2009 8:28:26 AM |

prayer - god(s) = "training" your subconscious mind
Most atheists already know about this..... (It debunks all of the "prayer heals" studies.)
