I've always had big dogs. I cant really do the purse size dog All my pets have also been either free to good home, or some sort of adoption. I'm not paying $3k for a pure breed when there's plenty of awesome muts [Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:23 PM. Reason : and no ^]

a pug! i hate small dogs too but for some reason I love pugs.[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:24 PM. Reason : ]

^^^^Komondors are very territorial and hard to manage though. If you have pre-existing pets I'd recommend a puppy just for ease of introduction. A mutt really is best, but still might retain breed characteristics, so do your research. [Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:25 PM. Reason : stupid snoop]

lol what are those dogs called? those were the shit in the 90s always on like sesame street and shitI'm Big Business and i approved this message.

criteria: must get along with kitty

english bulldog
1/5/2009 10:25:25 PM
why does he have to GET you a dog?It should be a dog that you two get together. It's going to be a family member.go get me a family member!!1
1/5/2009 10:26:49 PM
Bulldogs are extremely expensive and have a lot of health concerns. If you have a cat I REALLY recommend a puppy. We had two rescue dogs before we got our puppy and neither rescue would get along with the cat, the second actually mauled Hobie.

Like I said, I'm not a fan of small dogs, but these are too freakin cute!http://www.legacy-kennels.com/photo_gallery_of_pugs_.htmI'm not talking big like great dane size... but like labrador, golden retriever, rottweiler, german shepherd sizeI stare at enough pictures of cute animals for him to know what I would squeal at. I could care less what breed of dog, I just want a dog!I would really really really really love to get a puppy! But we're not home enough right now to get it house broken. So that's why I figured 6 months - 1 year old.[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:30 PM. Reason : .]

Rescue one!!! or if you buy one don't buy from a breeder.
1/5/2009 10:27:40 PM
How the fuck would you recommend buying one without going through a breeder? Buying from a pet store??
1/5/2009 10:29:00 PM
1/5/2009 10:31:01 PM
golden retriever! If you buy from a breeder do your research[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:33 PM. Reason : i dont like shibas, dominant from day one]
1/5/2009 10:32:32 PM
1/5/2009 10:33:05 PM
I "bought" my cat by basically making a donation. It was a set donation fee for adoption.I dont plan to buy from a breeder, dont worry.
1/5/2009 10:33:07 PM
How can anyone recommend a particular breed of dog without knowing your wants/needs?A busy person who lives in an apartment does not need the same kind of dog that an active person in a house with a yard could manage.
1/5/2009 10:34:57 PM
get a boxer
1/5/2009 10:35:24 PM
I'd love to see a boxer in a small apartment, hah!
1/5/2009 10:36:36 PM
I was merely looking for suggestions.2 people that work 32-40 hours a week, mostly days.Big back yard, plan on fencing it in at some point.I like big dogs. This thread was more so a *hint hint* at BEU
1/5/2009 10:37:03 PM
Only dog ever to seriously injure me was a bulldog, but it was the owner's fault. He needed to get some energy out but the parent's didn't pay for any time out of the kennel. We were packed so little extra time to let them out anyways. Guy escaped during medication, I tried to put hm back in and he came for me.Only scary thing is he didn't stop until someone grabbed him off of me. Yeah I'll admit, I'm still nervous around em.Stubborn, strong-willed. Need strong leader
1/5/2009 10:37:12 PM
I'd say a retired greyhound then. They're big but don't require much exercise. If you're both gone eight+ hours a day that's really not fair to the dog...[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:39 PM. Reason : but a fenced yard is a MUST for them, they'll run]
1/5/2009 10:38:07 PM
A lot of retired greyhounds are off the track and will need exercise, or have risk of escaping if left out of sight in the backyard for too long.A lot of them have anxiety issues too.I worked with a greyhound rescue lady and let me tell you......................
1/5/2009 10:40:27 PM
Perhaps...and the cat might be an issue.
1/5/2009 10:41:14 PM
^^Truth. I had a friend in high school whose family adopted retired greyhounds. All but one of those dogs had some serious issues.I still vote for: [Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:42 PM. Reason : .]

Get a golden! but not a goofy one, an adorable fuzzy companion!
1/5/2009 10:41:47 PM
God. Not a golden...EVERYONE gets a retriever. If you rescue chances are it'll be a mutt anyway. Remember you can't just get it, stick it in the house and then leave for work and expect it to be fine though.[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:43 PM. Reason : ^^I love Shibas, but they can be mean little fuckers]
1/5/2009 10:42:58 PM
Rescue a mutt!
1/5/2009 10:44:53 PM
Not with any dog! Not til they're old and too tired to run like crazy anyways.I'm sucker for goldens and not cause they're popular. The ones I met had the best demeanor, so smart, lots of tricks they can learn, so pretty, they seem to have a different kind of "connection" with humans too! Need exercise and will shed like a mofo though.[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:45 PM. Reason : like boxers, they love humans]
1/5/2009 10:45:03 PM
heh, every Shiba I've met has been either super lazy or super chill. It's a fine line but I swear there's a difference [Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:46 PM. Reason : a]
1/5/2009 10:46:18 PM
I planned on taking some time off around my birthday-- so that would be the perfect time to let it get used to the house [quote]I'd love to see a boxer in a small apartment, hah![quote]I'll do you one worse... I've seen a boxer AND pug both stuck in a kennel, in a small apartment. Literally lived in their own feces, and when they did get let out, they were so freaking excited that they just shit everywhere on their way out to the porch. Which they then shit on the screened in porch... Pretty sad.MORE CUTE PUPPY PICTURES!
1/5/2009 10:47:00 PM
^^Keep in mind the shibas in Japan are vastly different from the ones here. Personality-wise.
1/5/2009 10:49:33 PM
Every shiba puppy I work with had a timeline. If they were in the store for too long they would start growling at customers trying to dominate. Every single one would need a strict talking to.
1/5/2009 10:49:43 PM
^^ oh yeah? What's the difference generally speaking?
1/5/2009 10:50:48 PM
awwwwwwwwwwwww
1/5/2009 10:52:41 PM
we have boxer/pit mix puppies, im gonna go home and take pictures of them mlk weekend and post themtheres crappy cell phone pics of them in my gallery, both the mother and father are awesomely friendly dogs, they were born just before christmas and will be ready to be taken from the mother after 6-8 weeks[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:55 PM. 1/5/2009 10:53:50 PM
This is actually Lutra, remember I used to live over there? Anywho, we had lots of rescue shibas where I lived and yes they were awesome, because the Japanese generally treat their dogs like dogs, rarely kept inside I noticed. Anywho, after that I worked around a lot of shibas and all the ones I dealt with had major dominance problems and were very unpredictable, would definitely bite you if they felt like it. Have you seen the one on Cesar? They were like that. Basically turned into horrid little yappy dogs by Americans.
1/5/2009 10:54:43 PM
So what you're saying is if I want one, I should buy it while I'm still in Japan and not be lazy in training it?
1/5/2009 10:55:58 PM
lol I was wondering if lutra had rubbed off on humandrive or something
1/5/2009 10:56:22 PM
<3 boxersmy dad bred them when i was a kid. i think that there is nothing cuter than a brindle boxer puppy with floppy ears.
1/5/2009 10:56:40 PM
the dad is a boxer/pit mix and the mom is pure pitthe dad has floppy boxer ears though, theyre badass
1/5/2009 10:58:25 PM
Haha, perhaps. We seriously looked at them before we got our puppy, but the husband wanted a larger dog.Boxers are great dogs, but you have to be very careful about breeding. They are prone to a lot of genetic problems like bloat and cancer. Most boxers actually die of cancer rather than old age.
1/5/2009 10:58:49 PM
Ya, please don't clip the ears, Our boxers had this obsession of sitting right in your lap though they weigh a shitton.Their jiggly hips when excited are freaking adorable though
