i might do that volunteer thing today, because im tired of being at that manufacturing plant.

i was told at the new job-to-be that i would be hired in a heartbeat as soon as the application process went through...in my opinion there's > 95% chance this follows through

so the risks are:
-voluntarily leave work, receive ~$3200 in severance + ~$1400 for unused vacation days
-be unable to return if the job-to-be falls through for some freak reason
or
-dont voluntarily leave, hope to be laid off by their decision (~65% chance), get same money as above, just maybe a couple weeks more pay maybe
or
-possibility do not get laid off, remain miserable in current job, leave work at the end of march, but endure the agony for 2½ more months and just quit, but do not receive severance pay

i think i can draw unemployment for a couple months starting after i receive the last of the severance pay (up in VA would be about $376/week)

Well there's a massive layoff going on at work, they just allowed for a week for people to voluntarily leave with severance (I guess so they at least give people that want to leave a chance rather than make someone leave that isn't willing to)

The new job is basically a sure thing, it's just not 'locked down' on paper yet

Regardless, I'm gonna tell my boss this afternoon that I'm going to volunteer for the severance

I've been here 1.5 yrs, so I get 4 weeks pay from my last work day

Minimum of 4 wks and Maximum of 26 wks

So people of 30+ yrs are a little s.o.l.
