I will say by far the most creepiest (not only scary but extremely creepy) videogames I have played so far is:

Any of the Fatal Frame games, only video games to actually creep me out after I shut it off. Also System Shock had some extremely creepy sound effects.

Bioshock stayed creepy for me until i finally 'died', and then I realized that I could probably just get the wrench and repeatedly hit/respawn/hit things until they died.
but the cat's cradle(?) in thief 3 was pretty

Creepiest level ever, Holy Shit. The Shalebridge Cradle is a huge well designed haunted asylum/children's hospital that was abandoned and derelict for a long time. The first half you go through without seeing any monsters and the whole time your freaked out, like bad. The guys who made it must be demented because they succeeded in making the best atmosphere for a poltergiest I have ever seen in a video game. doesn't even begin to explain it.
This is the part I pretty stopped progressing in the game. Had to invert the colors so it can be seen since Theif is such a dark contrasted game it wont show up off a printscreen pic. Like I said, you get through the first part of the cradle without seeing anything so much as a rat crawling across the floor, till you open this one door and all hell breaks lose.

^I came into this thread specifically to mention the Shalebridge Cradle.
The best part is not the enemies themselves... it's the fact that they could be anywhere and that any electric lights in the area flicker like crazy whenever one is nearby... and then you're just spinning in all directions hoping to see it before it sees you. 1/9/2009 1:44:41 PM |

Thief for PC
Never been scared playing a video game until this one. Its a solitary game, not many enemies and your almost always alone in the dark. Throw in some freaky ghost that sneak up on you and this shit gets to you. Towards the end I would only play it during the day. 1/9/2009 10:08:38 PM |

no shit. when I first played that game, coming out of the Temple of Time and finding redeads in the courtyard freaked me out enough to make me quit playing for a few months. then I got to the forest temple and it got even worse.
Today, however, it is probably my favorite level out of the entire Zelda series.1/10/2009 9:44:00 AM |
