There's nothing wrong illegal about looking for a "Christian female roomie".

The Fair Housing Act typically doesn't apply when you're renting space in a home that you also live in.

The Fair Housing Act doesn't really come into play until you start owning properties for the sole purpose of renting them. Even then, there's some maximum number of units you can own and still not be subject to the Act.

Well, maybe she wants to live in a home where they can have a roommate prayer group. Or one where she can bring her church friends over without having to fear possibly alienating her roommate.

She's not asking to quiz the new girl on her Bible knowledge, but to meet her to make sure they mesh. My point is, why do any of you care? Why does it offend you that a Christian would prefer to live with another Christian?

I don't care. I'm at work, getting paid to kill time. This is a relatively interesting thread: you have a slightly prejudicial OP, people calling them out on it, and then other posters taking the bait and sticking up for the OP. It's better than the chit chat threads at the moment.

What, and because they're the same religion, all worries about common courtesies, social circles, and things like that...all out the window because of a common denominator?

Pretty sure that if christian roommate A brings over christian friends for socializing, there still exists the possibility for alienation of christian roommate B.

What if new roommate is totally socially inept and unpleasant to be around? Are they going to be automatically included just because they're a christian? Common religion hasn't eliminated the potential for friction.

Religion isn't going to solve the problems of incompatible roommates, asshole tendencies, or most other issues that arise between roommate. To suggest otherwise is a little naive. It might cause issues...that would arise in another form. If a potential roommate gets upset because you're bringing over friends, they'll do so whether it's for a prayer meeting or a study group.

I just think it's silly to exclude a lot of potential roommates just because they don't share your brand of religion. I also consider it unwise, unless there are circumstances excusing it. Like maybe your dad is paying for everything for you, but has stipulated that you live with christian women.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the situation in this case.

And I do agree, conflicts arise no matter who your roommates are. I guess I have a different perspective though. I've known Rose since my freshman year of high school, and I know where she's coming from with her request. I can also guarantee that she's easily the nicest and easiest person to get along with I've ever met.

^^^^ The OP just made an ad looking for a certain type of roommate. It was up to everyone else on TWW to get all upset about some perceived injustice brought about by this thread.

So she wants to have a girl who will get involved with her roommate's activities and maybe even involved with her church. She wants a roommate that'll be a friend and not a cave troll, and super perky christians tend to be this way.

I encourage you to go to Calvary Chapel of Cary off of ten ten road Sunday morning to see how people can be tied together and be friends just because they share the same religious beliefs.

The christian thing also has to do with a moral code and belief system that guides how people live and act in their day to day lives.

And OF COURSE it will also make sure she doesn't get a foreign graduate student that doesn't speak english and give her a nasty case of culture shock. Man... if some of these people I live around were my roommates I'd lose my goddamn mind. (I live in little india off of avent ferry rd). My neighbors stay awake til 4-5-6 AM most nights and, for all I know, wake up at 10-11pm and go to bed around 4 in the afternoon. It'd explain why the hell my neighbors are always (always) up until 3am... They just never got over the jet lag once they got here.
