1/11/2009 7:29:10 PM

1/11/2009 7:29:52 PM

i was looking at this last fridayi was pretty off one way or another with my withholdings last yeari'm not sure if i was doing the estimator right, but it looks like it's going to be either i owe $750 or i get back ~$830lawl[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 7:36 PM. Reason : e]
1/11/2009 7:35:15 PM
ha yeah, it's always funny when people talk about getting money back. you're not doing it right.
1/11/2009 7:35:26 PM
whateveri don't withhold anythingi like that check
1/11/2009 7:36:34 PM
a truly financially responsible person would put down 100 dependents, not pay in a dime, invest his money, make interest on it, then pay the govt at the end of the year[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 7:37 PM. Reason : he would also opt out of social security]
1/11/2009 7:36:59 PM
dont forget inflation loss!we could do an eW2 this year and supposively get the forms a few weeks earlybut i wouldnt have my other shit like that early so i didnt worry about itplus i dont own a printer and would have to remember to do it at work[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 7:38 PM. Reason : e]
1/11/2009 7:37:29 PM
i wonder how much interest i paid to CFNC in 2008should be a lot more than i paid them in 2007
1/11/2009 7:37:51 PM
true. i'm pretty sure i'm dead even on federal and might get a SLIGHT amount back on state.i was really hoping for a lot more back though call it whatever you want.. a check for a grand that you aren't expecting is always nice, even if it is an "interest free loan to the gov't"..esp with interest so f'in low these days.. 0% is better than the huge loss most ppl are taking with investment accounts right now
1/11/2009 7:38:41 PM
especially since that money invested could have easily lost 50% this past year
1/11/2009 7:40:37 PM
1/11/2009 7:42:19 PM
i got mine. my wife probably won't get hers because her former boss went AWOL.
1/11/2009 9:10:02 PM
dolla dolla
1/11/2009 10:10:17 PM
It doesn't matter how early I get my W2 because my tax software is usually waiting on updates that won't happen until March.
1/11/2009 10:25:40 PM
i wish i would get mine already so i can do taxes...want to know how much money i'm getting back
1/11/2009 10:26:42 PM
I don't have taxes taken out. I just keep the full amount in savings and pay out at the end of the year.
1/11/2009 10:30:45 PM
ya im an idiot[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 10:39 PM. Reason : .]
1/11/2009 10:32:39 PM
^^smart man^quote it all man:
1/11/2009 10:36:25 PM
where is the option to not have any taxes taken out? are you talking about the # of allowances? cause i've never gotten a job and had the option to "not pay taxes"
1/11/2009 10:37:17 PM
put down that you have 99 dependents[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 10:38 PM. Reason : you're still paying taxes. withholding is just to help idiots who would spend it and have no $tax]
1/11/2009 10:37:41 PM
i thought you couldnt claim dependents if you parents claimed you as one
1/11/2009 10:39:32 PM
you can put whatever number you want on that form you fill out when you start a job. it is used to determine withholding.when you file taxes is when you have to put "0"
1/11/2009 10:40:28 PM
its not dependents, its allowanceslook up W-4 in google
1/11/2009 10:40:34 PM
^yeah, proper terminology
1/11/2009 10:41:18 PM
i use to always put 0 on it...now i put 1 to get more money...and my parents cant claim me anymore cause i'm 24
1/11/2009 10:42:19 PM
i claim 8 allowances.yeah.[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 10:46 PM. Reason : i think 10 is the max]
1/11/2009 10:43:42 PM
not to veer too much off topic but...if i were to donate some clothes tomorrow, could i still write that off for 2008 taxes?
1/11/2009 10:46:01 PM
not legally
1/11/2009 10:49:24 PM
no
1/11/2009 10:49:41 PM
obviously we should listen to nrr since he's displayed amazing grasp of tax law aready in this thread
1/11/2009 10:49:54 PM
the reason i asked is cause for my IRA thing i signed up for recently, it asked if i wanted the first 3 months of donations this year to be counted on 2008 taxes...or something to that effect...i checked no...made me wonder if the tax year went til like april 15th or something
1/11/2009 10:52:27 PM
IRA Contributions go up to the April deadlinepretty much everything had to be completed by calendar year 2008
1/11/2009 10:53:17 PM
^^^where was i wrong?
1/11/2009 10:54:46 PM
calling allowances dependants for one
1/11/2009 10:56:13 PM
well, they're kinda supposed to align, but the govt withholds more for the number of allowances you put down so they get that free loan[Edited on January 11, 2009 at 11:01 PM. Reason : ideally, you would put allowances=dependents and the govt would make it break even in the end]
