"Texas Inmate Gouges Out Remaining Eye, Eats It
Man Previously Plucked Out An Eye In 2004HOUSTON (AP) ?

A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it. Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary.

"Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.

Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after the Dec. 9 incident. Then he was transferred and remains at the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility near Richmond southwest of Houston.

"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."

At his trial, defense lawyers also argued he suffered from alcohol and drug abuse.

Thomas does not have an execution date.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in October upheld his conviction and death sentence for the death of 13-month-old Leyha Marie Hughes. Also killed March 27, 2004, were his wife, Laura Christine Boren, 20, and their son, 4-year-old Andre Lee.

Thomas, from Texoma, walked into the Sherman Police Department and told a dispatcher he had just murdered the three and had stabbed himself in the chest.

Thomas told police how he put his victims' hearts in his pocket and left their apartment, took them home, put them in a plastic bag and threw them in the trash.

Court documents described the three victims as having "large, gaping wounds to their chests."

Texas prison authorities say Andre Thomas, shown here in an undated file photo, gouged out his one remaining eye in December 2008 while on death row. "

I've seen many inmates who thought they were the Devil, possessed, or cursed by voodoo powder--among a number of other nutball things. Prisons are filled with those who really should be in mental institutions.

I think there should be prisons for mentally ill criminals, not just hospitals with locked doors.
Those should be for non-criminals only.

^^^^ The point is that inmates should receive meaningful psychological and psychiatric treatment--regardless of institution. This is for the benefit of us all.

I'm guessing he got his daily dose of vitamin "see."

How does one even manage to pull out their eyeball? Like, how does that physically work? Isn't the eye kind of wedged into the socket, in addition to being secured in place by some muscles and the optic nerve?

that's terrible.

Just imagining the tearing and sucking sounds that must accompany tearing your own eye out is enough to make me a little sick.

Does anyone else find they have an objection to him receiving the death penalty? He killed 3 people, he should expect to spend his life behind bars but aside from the crime itself, the dude ate both of his own eyeballs and stabbed himself in the chest, how mentally competent could he be?

I don't know if its the right thing, but let me play devils advocate. Can anyone who plans and carries out a murder really be considered sane?

^^^What do you consider sane though? If an otherwise normal woman walks in on her husband sodomizing her 7 year old daughter and shots him, is she insane? Plus, even the crazies or serial kills usually refrain from injuring their own body, let alone willfully disabling themselves. If your willing to destroy your own body in that fashion its not really unexpected that he wouldn't do the same to someone else.

^^ Agreed, his is a burden to society. But is it ethical to put to death a person who's brain function is functioning improperly. What about others that are a burden on society, say a quadriplegic?

Not suggesting the guy should be able to run free, that everyone who kills is crazy, that everyone who kills should be allowed to live, or that hes not a burden to society. Its unethical and illegal to put to death incapacitated individuals, and he seems to fit, so why would be be on death row?

^^^^ oh yeah, absolutely. I don't even see how you could argue otherwise. There are people who are quite sane who do it because they are terrible people, not because they are crazy. There are others who kill people who deserve it, although the law still considers it murder.

Yeah, that's what I've heard it's like from people who've eated rabbit eyeballs in SERE school (I declined--I was hungry, but not THAT hungry.)

well, it's the thought that someone....unwilling to think beyond reason....to the point of even hurting themselves....can be willfully tried in a court of law, by the same laws that govern a perfectly sane human being....might be sentenced to death

I mean, that shit OBVIOUSLY has to be out of their control.

the quadriplegic still has some net worth (see: that hawkings guy)

this guy is has no net worth

i don't really care and don't know whether or not he should be killed (i've never met the guy). however, everyone else was throwing up what they think so i figured i'd stir the pot.

i don't know if it's completely out of their control or not, especially in all cases. I don't generally think that people THAT mentally deranged should be treated the same as everyone else under the law, though.

on the other hand, maybe being peacefully put to death would be for the best in this case for everyone concerned.

well, all I'm saying is that for all we know (we don't know everything about mental illness), this guy may be doing something perfectly normal in his 'eyes'.

"
NeuseRvrRae: I'm going to clip my toenails...
The Law: That's against the law. You can't do that. Stop.
NeuseRvrRae: I'm just clipping my toenails man. What's the big deal?! BAM. There. It's done.... Toenail clipped
The Law: That's it! We're sentencing you to DEATH!

"

Should NeuseRvrRae be sentenced to death?
Nah. But we should probably isolate him from the public so that he doesn't clip his toenails again.

You're right. People that are mentally ill shouldn't be treated the same as everyone else. But it's pretty silly to kill them just because they, unwillingly, think differently from the rest of us.
