^^really? i did not know that. interesting

honestly though, i didn't discover ars until rss became popular and i only read ars in bloglines/greader. it was about a year later i realized they had forums. i probably have about 3 posts there i think there's too many subforums on there. the only one that would maintain my interest on a daily basis is the programmer forum. and in this day and age, i'd think digg or stackoverflow would have more traffic

[Edited on January 13, 2009 at 9:52 PM. Reason : i've tried to be active on those too and it doesn't stick for more than a day or two]

I only read a couple on ars myself, some of the hardware sections, both MS sections and occasionally the linux section. Mainly I read the networking section though.

for computer-specific tech[no] discourse, I found 2cpu.com's forums at least a couple years ago to have consistently the most rigorous and productive discussions of any tech forum I followed

while for techno discussion with more of an EE slant, particularly amateur high energy physics (induction heating, rail and coil guns, tesla coils and other high voltage transformers, etc), I've found 4hv.org's forums take the mad scientist cake

neither is really comparable to Tech Talk. there's a good core of technical users here, but the level of discourse seems to hover around that of Dell or Apple's support forums, with very little project discussion
