I know no one gives a shit, but I'm moving to (or near) Jersey City in a couple weeks.

Besides it sucking, what are some decent areas? Should I live close by in Jersey City or further out? How bad is driving/how easy is it to get around without a car? I'm wondering if I should even consider Manhattan. Any issues with living/working in different states?

Lots of people live in Jersey and work in Manhattan, not the other way around.

Just make sure you're close enough to bars so you can have lots and lots of JAGA BAHMS

dont think it would make any sense to live in nyc and work in jersey.

Unless you like overpriced slumhousing or extremely overpriced decent housing.

I'm sorry.

That said, out toward Pompton Lakes is a pretty nice area and not too much of a commute.

thanks, but what do you consider "not too much of a commute"?

When traffic isn't awful (as in car accident screwing things up bad), it takes about 45 minutes to get from Pompton Lakes to Jersey City. When traffic is bad it takes a little over an hour.

Oh yeah, and there's Park and Rides in the area if you don't feel like driving.

I have family that lives here: http://tinyurl.com/8e58do

Nice quiet area with lots of lakes, hiking, etc. Uncle commutes to Newark every day.

But a lot of this depends on your budget. If you're looking for something cheap you're better off trying to find something that isn't a complete shithole in Jersey City

Pomton Lakes is in the middle of nowhere. I mean if you're looking for suburbs thats one place to go.
But its not where you're going to find a lot of 20-something professionals or much of anything for that matter

I'm fine living in the city, even though it is going to be expensive, but I just was wondering if I should watch out for certain areas. A yard would be nice though, since we have a dog.

i mean, if you're on the eastern part of Jersey City, you're LITERALLY looking at Mid-Manhattan, and can take the PATH train there in a matter of minutes. Jersey City is considerably cheaper than Manhattan.

check out Hoboken, East Rutherford, maybe Patterson, Pasaik.

i used to work with a guy who lived in union city. His rent was something like 500 bucks for his part of a 2bedroom. He said the area was almost completely cuban and he didnt really do anything in the surrounding area because he didnt speak Spanish. I think it took him 30min or so to get to work around the Broadway Lafayette stop.

you'll end up paying more for rent in brooklyn or queens but you dont have to deal with Path bullshit.

Bushwick is a good place to be unemployed

my rent is cheaper and the chinese food on the corner is cheaper

if you're in the right spot (like me) you're convenient to like 5 train lines (L, A, C, J, Z)
