about 2 hours ago, i was sitting on the end of my couch a few feet from the front door of my apartment and being midnight here in a complex that is usually quiet anyways it was dead quiet and i was just finishing up some studying for something.

the door handle starts rattling and then I hear something at the window next to the door, and then the door handle again violently for about 5 seconds. The whole time I was still frozen from having the bejeezus scared out of me from the initial noise since i was so close to the door and it was loud. I didnt know what to even do so I just stood up and yelled "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?" and then the rattling stopped they banged on the door once and then I went and I looked out my windows I couldnt see anything

its a good thing I had a good bowel movement about 30 minutes before that.

You should have melted his face with a guitar solo. No more B&E attempts for face meltees.

It's called a gun, get one.

Tonight we were sitting on the couch watching tv when a loud noise came from the front door, it was the dog tripping on our shoes but it scared the shit out of me.

We also have an alarm system which really helps me sleep at night.

^^^yea I do too. Mine doesnt go to an actual company but it sure as hell would wake me up quick if I was sleeping and someone actually got in.

As long as they didn't have a gun it would have almost been more comforting to have the door open and bash someone's face in instead of not knowing who it was. not sure what kind of trouble you can get in though for smashing their face in with a baseball bat as soon as they come in the door.

there is a VERY small chance it was someone lost who was too afraid to admit they were at the wrong door when I yelled but the way my apartment is set up it would be very hard to accidentally go to the wrong door unless you were trashed or something.

Jiggling the handle aggressively probably isn't someone trying to get into their apt.

if you are in your home and someone is trying to come through your door/window/other household orifice, you can legally shoot them. once they're in your home, though, you can only legally beat the living shit out of them, unless you feel your life is threatened.

thats what i thought, which is a pretty ridiculous rule. if someone that i dont know forcibly enters my home while im there, i have a right to feel pretty threatened whether i see a weapon or not because by the time i see a weapon it might be too late for me to act

^^ "Castle Doctrine". It doesn't matter if he's got a screwdriver, a book, or an AK- anything that could cause you or your family serious physical injury is ground for a good ol' fashion hollow-point pumping

^ can't shoot 'em in the back. police are less likely to believe they were a threat to you if their back was to you.

I would just like to take this opportunity to express how much I despise those alarm commercials where little Suzie is playing the piano and big bad black clad burgler guy comes breaking in, and is deterred by the oh-so brave alarm system while she and mommy huddle by the phone waiting for the police.

Why?
Does being pro-2nd-amendment (which I am, btw,) now mean you must oppose house alarms?

Nah, those commercials are just retarded. The notion of some guy kicking in the front door in an upper middle class suburban neighborhood (which is where those are usually based) in the middle of the day is totally retarded.

I love the alarm commercials with the annoying woman who's all like ALARM FORCE HAS DETECTED A BREAK-IN, THE POLICE HAVE BEEN CALLED! LEAVE THE ROOM NOW!

I was in the same situation, and I didn't have any ammo because we had been practicing the day before - I just pulled back the action and let it snap next to the door and they went away. It was a 45 so it was pretty loud.

Glad to hear you're ok.

You can legally shoot someone during illegal entry into your home/apt. Once they are in the house/apt you CANNOT shoot them, as they are only a trespasser. However, if said trespasser poses an imminent that will result in serious injury, death, or sexual assault, or commits a felony, you may shoot them, as long as they are not attempting to flee. While you are in your home/apartment, you do not have to retreat.

This does not apply outside of the home or for property (outside the home).

^^^ My CC instructor put it like this (more or less):

"If you catch a thief with your Bose surround sound system bundled up in his arms, you may WANT to shoot him, but you can't. If he sees that you have a gun, he may drop your Bose surround sound system. You may WANT to shoot him, but you can't. If he runs away, let him run away. If he grabs a screwdriver and charges you, light his ass up."

You are not allowed to use deadly force in the defense of property- only people. To top it off, if you are planning to defend someone else with deadly force, the rules have to apply for them as well:

1) Imminent threat of great physical harm, death, or sexual assault
2) Person of ordinary firmness (any normal, mentally sound human being) would have done the same thing as you
3) You didn't instigate or provoke the hostile situation
4) Force used was not excessive

For #4, excessive force basically means that you dropped them in six shots, reloaded your revolver, and then shot them again as they were bleeding out onto your kitchen floor.

when I lived on Thea Ln. I came home one day and found a big footprint on the front door and the door jam was broken. My guess is they gave it 2 good kicks before they heard the barking and noticed the 150lb Rottweiler staring out the window at them.

i was living like 4 houses down from that house on Thea Ln that got broken into and those 2 dudes got tied up back in like 2000. I wonder if it was the same people that tried to break into my place.

I think I remember the story. The 2 dudes were sitting in their living room playing Xbox in the middle of the day and a couple black dudes walked in and forced them down on the floor at gunpoint. Tied them up, told them they were going to kill them, etc etc. Then in the end, I think all they stole was the Xbox.

Just tell them that you shot him in the middle of a roundhouse kick.

I'm sure the majority of them happen at night, but home invasions do happen. If money isn't a factor I don't know why you wouldn't take a few steps to protect yourself from them.

^ I can think of a few people off the top of my head who have had something like that happen to them. All were involved in a type of lifestyle that brought those type of people into contact with them though.
