Quote : | "STATUS 3: Classes are canceled until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009; the University is open but operating under adverse weather advisory.
Provost Larry A. Nielsen, in consultation with Chancellor James L. Oblinger and Vice Chancellor of Finance and Business Charles Leffler, announced the decision after university officials reviewed the latest National Weather Service forecast and local driving conditions.
When the university is closed or opens late, no students, faculty members, or staff members are expected to be on campus except for students who reside in campus housing; employees who have been issued advance written instructions on a standing basis by the appropriate department head requiring that they report to work on their regular schedule even if the university is closed; or any other employee who is notified by an appropriate supervisor on a situation-specific basis to report to work during a closing. (Employees are responsible for ensuring they can be reached via valid contact information.)
Regular employees whose presence is not required (non-essential) will not be docked - nor will they be required to make up the work time or report their time as annual or other accrued leave - when the university officially closes or opens late. Regular, leave-earning, SPA and EPA employees who are required to work (essential) are granted equivalent alternate paid time off on an hour-for-hour basis.
Individuals who are not required to report are encouraged to stay away from campus to help facilitate the efficient clearing of streets, sidewalks and parking lots. Any individual who needs to work on authorized activities - and who can reach the campus safely - may report to work with supervisory permission.
Students who miss scheduled activities will be allowed to make up any work missed. Faculty members should make arrangements to complete all interrupted activities. Scheduled events will be held only by explicit exception granted by the vice chancellor for finance and business.
Additional announcements concerning class and work schedules will be posted on the NC State home page, on the emergency call-in line at 513- 8888, and announced via local media outlets. The adverse weather regulation is online at http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/campus_environ/hea- lth_safety_welfare/REG04.20.7.php" |
Just thought this would be interesting for you people who don't live on campus. We don't really have to go to school tomorrow based upon this...

^ only if there were labs Monday. If labs run TWH, then they would have proceeded normally. 1/21/2009 12:51:07 AM |

^^^ is kind of right, but is looking at the wrong info. Classes being canceled =/= the university being closed. It is neither closed nor opening late. It was open all day Tuesday as well, even though there weren't any classes.
if you click on the alert on the ncsu homepage, you'll see that it says
Quote : | "STATUS 3: Classes cancelled until 10am; NC State open and operating under Adverse Weather Advisory." |
Statuses 1-5 are listed/defined on the page linked by Big Business above.
Quote : | "4.1. The University will operate normally unless the Chancellor or Provost publicly announces:
STATUS 1: "The University (or a specific operational unit) is closed; only essential personnel should report," or
STATUS 2: "The University (or a specific operational unit) will open late; essential personnel should report as required" or
STATUS 3: "Classes are cancelled; the University is open but operating under adverse weather advisory," or
STATUS 4: "Classes are in session; the University is open but operating under adverse weather advisory."
4.2 Normal operations status, when the University is operating at full status with no special advisories, may be referred to as Status 5: Normal Operations. In the absence of any formal status announcement, the institution is considered to be operating at Status 5.
...... further down....
6.4 Activities Affected by Class Cancellation or Classes held Under Adverse Weather Advisory. If the Chancellor or Provost announces that classes or other activities are cancelled - or that classes are being held under adverse weather advisory -- and that this is an optional workday for faculty and staff, the following rules apply:
6.4.1. Students who miss scheduled activities will be allowed to make up any work missed.
6.4.2 Faculty members should make arrangements to complete all interrupted activities." |
That being said and considering the roads shouldn't be bad by that time; I would contact the instructor of the non-lab portion of the class (assuming there is one), or the department, Wednesday morning to try to find out if the lab instructor is planning to hold class or not.

so is what big business posted correct? do we get penalized for not attending class today or is it guarenteed we can make up our work...or is it up to the professor to decide what happens. 1/21/2009 11:44:29 AM |

what he posted is correct. you don't have to go. can't be penalized. 1/21/2009 12:21:49 PM |

what he posted is not correct. but he got to the right conclusion regarding students and class. The university is/was/did not open late nor was it closed at any point. The stuff regarding employees is not accurate.
It's like asking someone, 7-2= ? and then they say, 2+3=5.
I'm not sure where he got the message he posted, I didn't get that email (i'm both an employee and a student). The emails I got were different. If you click and read the link he posted with it, everything is explained in detail. 1/21/2009 1:31:16 PM |

if so, they changed it since he had posted it. Maybe they posted the thing for closings and realized they put the wrong thing up and changed it. I don't know, I just know that the information he quoted does not match STATUS 3. And that would be clear to anyone who simply read the document. 3, 4, or 5 means there are classes. However, there are conditions with 3 and 4. 1 is closed, 2 is opening late.
This is what was on ncsu.edu when i looked (And is what comes up on google):
Quote : | "STATUS 3: Classes Canceled until 10 a.m.; NC State Open and Operating Under Adverse Weather Advisory
January 20, 2009 STATUS 3: Classes Canceled until 10 a.m. for Wednesday, Jan. 21; NC State Open and Operating Under Adverse Weather Advisory
Classes at North Carolina State University have been canceled until 10 a.m. for Wednesday, January 21. The university is open and will operate under the adverse weather plan.
Provost Larry Nielsen, in consultation with Chancellor James Oblinger and Vice Chancellor of Finance and Business Charles Leffler, announced the decision after university officials reviewed the latest National Weather Service forecast and local driving conditions. With the university open but operating under an adverse weather advisory, essential employees should report for work, while employees in non-critical roles must make their own decisions about reporting to work, based on personal safety. In such circumstances, leave-earning employees may use accrued time, or may make up missed time within 12 months.
Announcements concerning class and work schedules will be posted on the NC State home page, on the emergency call-in line at 513-8888, and announced via local media outlets. The NC State University adverse weather regulation is online at http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/campus_environ/health_safety_welfare/REG04.20.7.php Wolfline buses will begin service at 9 a.m.Visit http://www.ncsu.edu/wolfline for bus updates." |
Regardless, the original question was fairly legitimate considering the time classes were to start and the length of the class. But it sort of surprises me how many people don't understand how the adverse weather policy works (i've been around ncsu since 2001) and how many can't just read the stuff explaining the different statuses, which is easily accessible and clear enough that most students should be able to make heads or tails of it.
/rant, telling people they're wrong, etc. No poor intentions, I was just trying to get it straight for everyone1/22/2009 12:14:53 AM |
