Who has toured it? Is it worth it?

I want to see where the President resides and the kids and family and personal areas. I bet it's awesome, especially for the kids.

I went to Washington, DC for a couple days with my dad a few years back and, among many other things, toured the White House. It was not the most memorable experience of that trip. The Library of Congress, Smithsonian, Memorial Wall, random eclectic restaurants, streetside musicians, and reflecting pool all rank higher on the "shit I'm glad I saw" scale


but I'm glad I saw it, no doubt.

Awesome. I've been to DC countless times just never in the White House. Doesn't sound like a personal tour though, just the crap rooms (I say that in the nicest way possible)

Seems like a risk to me... do they allow tours of the pentagon? nuclear facilities?
What's stopping some white house tourist from deploying chemical or biological attacks within?

seeing the personal stuff isn't going to happen.
it's been years since I toured the white house. if I remember correctly, you get to see a wing of the white house...the same wing that every other tourist sees...the wing that the president and his family don't really use/live in

took a huge tour around '95. my aunt worked in the government and we got a private tour.

Bush wouldn't let anyone tour the white house unless you had a pre-approved group of 10 or more and only for educational purposes, like classes. Probably b/c he is a scared little bitch. But maybe Obama will open it back up again.

(Ive never been for the record but have looked into it)
Last I checked, you had to be friends with your congressman (easy to-do) and schedule it for a specific day. I highly doubt they are self-tours, maybe years ago they were. Normally they do it in groups as well. They walk you through some of the well known areas (color rooms, ex presidents bedrooms, etc). I want to say occasionally you could also go through the oval office if the president wasnt in.

i did the public tour many years ago - i think it's worth it if you have the time - you didn't get to see all of the personal areas though....

the summer of 2003 i got a private tour and was on the roof of the west wing and that was pretty cool - my grandfather started a company a few decades ago that makes covers for roofing (somewhat like some pool covers you may have seen) so that roofers can work in inclement weather - when he sold this one he added into the contract that our family would get to go see it and get a tour and whatnot



the wouldn't let me take my camera up on the roof for security reasons

Public tours are not that cool. I went through once while i was younger for the Easter Egg Roll and they opened up all the old rooms which was cool. I dropped some jam on the couch in the blue room and tried to rub it off but it didnt work.

I went on a private tour with my dad when I was around 5 yrs old. I had to pee really bad and they wouldn't let me go without a secret service agent going in the bathroom with me. It was a normal house 1/2 bath and the agent made me keep the door open and he stood there while I took a piss. That's the only memorable thing I have about that tour.
