Both Vonage and Packet8 say that my Satellite and Alarm system may not work with their service. I want to know if anyone has tried this and if it works.
AT&T can't hook up my landline or internet up for 3 weeks so I am using my neighbors wireless connection (with his permission) connected to my WRT54G v3.1 with DD-WRT setup as a repeater to get internet access. Once I get my DSL I can hardwire everything, but is it possible to hook vonage up through wireless? Obviously I'll have to port forward.
Current hookup Neighbors DSL --> wireless router --> Wireless repeater --> My computer
With VOIP I'd either get the wireless version or hardwire it into the repeater (WRT54G w/dd-wrt) and would like to put my alarm and dishnetwork connection through the VOIP connection.
Can anyone share their similar configuration and how well it works.

it works with an alarm, but the line quality is not consistent.
if you have ever sent a fax using vonage, for me they only go through 50-70% of the time, if that. it depends on your internet quality too.

yeah it'll work fine depending on the quality of the connection between you and your neighbor. just hardwire the packet8 phone into the repeater. just keep in mind that your traffic will have no QoS prioritization on his GW so you might have a shitty call or 2. if you have an iphone, I'd highly recommend the packet8 voip solution for it. my directv works fine with it, but I just connect the dvr to the internet directly. 1/21/2009 10:39:29 AM |

get a land line for an alarm. do not trust regular voip for that. 1/21/2009 10:42:05 AM |
