Flying into Dulles vs Reagan -- any significant difference aside from Dulles being 20+ miles out of town?
We're just making a sightseeing trip in from Canada, nothing too outrageous planned. flights into the area seem to be cheaper at Dulles. 1/21/2009 7:42:50 PM |

You can't get out of your seat for like first 20 minutes of the take off and approach at Reagan. I've flown out of both, Dulles is easier to park but if you take a cab it doesn't matter. 1/21/2009 7:47:12 PM |

yeah we're not renting a vehicle. I assume hopping a bus into DC wouldn't be that big of a deal. 1/21/2009 7:49:11 PM |

they havent done this for about a year now
as mentioned reagan has a dedicated metro stop that can get you right up into the heart of the city in about 10 minutes depending on time of day
dulles is cheaper because it is a good 20 minute drive away from DC (depending on time of day). while i primarily fly reagan beacuse i live in alexandria now, sometimes you get better direct flights to the west coast out of dulles.
if you are on a budget and are looking to shave money off your trip, fly into dulles, take the flyer bus for $8 each way or i think $14 round trip to the west falls church metro and then ride metro in. if youre on a super budget you can take a metro bus that goes to rosslyn, but that shit takes FOREVER (it's only like 3 bucks though)
if money isnt that big a deal, by all means fly into reagan...it will save you about 2 or 3 hours overall1/21/2009 9:04:05 PM |

I wouldn't fly to Dulles to save $10 but if you can save some money, getting to the metro isn't difficult. The metro bus (5A express) is $5 (or was) and takes you to Rosslyn (middle of town as opposed to the orange line)....which I would certainly do over getting to Falls Church.

^^is right...if you're saving significant dollars between the two and have the time, take dulles if money is a factor, but if it's like, less than say...$50-$75 it wouldn't be worth it to me.
rosslyn is on the orange line (like 15 minutes between the two stations), but you're not saving any time on the WMATA bus because it only comes like once an hour while the flyer bus comes every 15 minutes i think (maybe half hour but i think it's 15)

im not a dulles homer by any means, but they're replacing the people movers with a terminal train (Aerotrain) sometime this year.
Dulles isnt a bad airport, it just depends on where you're going and how much time/money you have availabile.
hell i fly out of BWI a lot of times because the flights back to raleigh are DIRT cheap, and all it costs is a $12 each way amtrak ticket for a 20 minute train ride from union station to the airport...
dont forget to check out BWI if you're really strapped for cash 1/22/2009 9:45:43 AM |

Reagan is worth the extra money to me. BWI and Dulles are about equal on the inconvenient location scale, but BWI is often much cheaper. 1/23/2009 6:41:40 PM |

It all depends on what airline and where you are in the metro. If you are on the Virginia side it is way to big a hassle to get to BWI, but could be cheaper. Reagan is obviously the closest, but Dulles isn't much longer if you are cabbing it at a non-peak travel time. 1/24/2009 3:23:46 AM |

Reagan has a better approach if you get a window seat. FWIW. Like everyone else has said, Reagan is more convenient. Twenty miles in Northern Virginia can be a LOONNGG way, depending on the time of day.1/24/2009 5:34:40 AM |

Flying in to Reagan is much better. You're ten minutes from anywhere in the city practically and it's pretty cool flying in over the Potomic...
But it's only a four hour drive...I'm driving it tomorrow actually 2/12/2009 3:37:38 PM |
