The man -- who in one case netted $58 -- has in the past few days attempted to scam cafeterias on the Patewood Memorial Hospital campus and at Fluor Corporation.

"He's flim-flamming these people with a sob story," Greenville Police Cpl. Jason Rampey said.

The man last tried to scam Fluor Corporation cafeteria on Monday but was unsuccessful, Rampey said.

In the first case, on Jan. 14, the man confronted a cafeteria employee at the Patewood campus and said that his son had become "went into shock" after eating a hamburger and had to go to the hospital for treatment, according to a police report.

The man told the employee that he had requested no onions on the hamburger because of his son's allergies but that a kitchen worker simply brushed the onions off the burger.

The man told the employee that he had talked with the hospital's president about getting a refund for his meal and reimbursement for medical expenses for his son, according to the report.

The employee gave the man $58.74 after the man offered a piece of paper allegedly detailing the cost of the meal ($31.43) and a shot that his son had to receive for treatment ($27.31), the report states.

The president of the hospital told police he never spoke to the man, and cafeteria workers said they didn't remember anyone who ordered more than $20 worth of food, according to the report.

The suspect is described as a white man, medium build, in his mid-40s, with dirty blonde/light brown hair with a bald spot in the back. The suspect also is described as someone who "bites his fingernails."

The suspect left in a white, four-door car with a sunroof and possible damage to the side window requiring plastic covering.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police tip line at (864) 271-4273.
