i have a dell latitude D620. i started having power/battery issues so dell is gonna fix it. but a couple weeks ago, a hinge broke and i replaced it myself b/c i forgot i even had a warranty. so there are obvious signs that i've disassembled it myself. is that going to void my warranty? i'd ask the dell support guy, but if it does void it, i'd like to know ahead of time so i can maybe sweet talk him or otherwise persuade them to overlook it. i'd rather not send it in though and not have it at all for 2 weeks if they are just gonna send it back to me and say your warranty is void cus you opened it. 1/28/2009 12:00:12 PM |

i wouldn't think so, since you could always claim you took it to geek squad, or whatever...and i'm pretty sure that doesn't void the warranty
i upgraded the hard drive and memory on a friend's computer, once, and she was able to send the computer in for warranty repair without them saying anything (same situation of worn screws)...that was HP, though 1/28/2009 12:40:12 PM |

yeah, dell is usually pretty cool about warranty stuff. the wear on the case screws could have been caused by any number of things, so i doubt they'd void your warranty for that.
apple's warranty service requirements are even stricter, and i've had my macbook apart 349270937 times, replaced the hd, replaced the dvd drive, replaced the ram, replaced the airport card even... granted, i always put the original stuff back in if i had to send it in for warranty repair, but apple never said a word, and it was quite obvious the case screws had been worked quite a few times.
i think as long as it's obvious that whatever you did to the machine isn't the cause of the problems you're having now, it won't be a problem.,/] 1/28/2009 1:01:24 PM |
