Is swearing on the most disposable digit really worth anything? I'd using something more evolutionarily significant like the thumb would be more appropriate.

The pinky swear originally indicated that the person who breaks the promise must cut off their pinky finger. Since it's not necessary to have it, it makes it more appropriate.
