Seems like 2-3 times a week I hear a number of loud bangs coming from around the area of Athens/Kaplan or Sumter Square Apartments. Usually they'll happen around 10-11pm and range from about 3-7 pops.

Does anyone else live around this area and hear the same thing? They sound like gunshots, and I can't imagine that people would be shooting off firecrackers on random nights, but I never see any crime in that area either on N&O's crime tracker:

Does anyone know what it is? If its gunfire, does anyone know what is going on?

on brent road i used to hear gunshots occasionally. called the police one time when there were a lot of them but they didn't care, the next time it happened i said there was a huge party and they sent two cars

its probably back-fire from someones jalopy who leaves for work around the same time everyday...working the night shift some where

drunken fireworks really isn't that uncommon either, but I also wouldnt doubt gunfire in that area either

I have lived in west raleigh awhile. I have heard target loads set off, but that has been 10yrs + ago.

For action, find Maple street in south Raleigh. Hit that about 11 pm on Sat night on you will see the future of every major east coast city. With housing down and jobs gone, the Ghetto is the coming attraction.

I heard them last night too at the West end of Kaplan; probably about the time you made this thread. It was a deep boom that sounded like a shotgun, but I was inside so it could have been that only the lower frequencies carried through the walls.

I'm near there and while I don't hear them every night (and wasn't there last night) I agree with Skack's statement--I sometimes hear low booms which sound more like a shotgun or something non-firearms related, unless we're losing the high frequency part of the noise. A little odd, but it's never sounded close enough for me to worry too much about it.
