1. USMC officer (aviator, EA-6B Prowler)

Intrusiveness into your personal life (what clothes you wear while on your own time away from work; getting in trouble at work for things like speeding tickets; ridiculous things like command vehicle inspections and mandatory reflective gear while riding motorcycles, because no price is too high for a marginal increase in safety.

Also, getting deployed to suckass 3rd world countries, and sent on training dets for weeks at a time while at home. Similarly, having to move every 2-4 years (all of these things are both a blessing and a curse, but there is a major downside to them all)

Oh, and big-time cog in the machine factor. The big green machine doesn't care. Getting screwed sometimes for no reason other than pure bad luck is a fact of life.


3. Yes...I'm a navigator/weapon system operator/electronic warfare officer in a $60,000,000 attack jet...I've seen and lived in a bunch of neat places, and done a TON of really cool stuff (I mean, I could write a few pages about the cool stuff that I've done just in the last 4 years, and the vast majority of that time wasn't even spent in an operational unit. I get paid pretty well, and will be able to retire at the age of 44. I have a top secret/SCI security clearance, which allows me access to all sorts of cool information, and can be valuable in the civilian world. Also, the satisfaction of knowing that you have an important job that makes an impact in a lot of ways, from the 19-year old Marine under your charge, to the troops that you protect with your aircraft, to the political and strategic implications of our military capability, to which your specialized and valuable expertise is critical.

1) Design machinery, mostly custom application waterjet cutting cleaning equipment at a very small company

2) Staring at a computer screen all day alone in an office. Dealing with old software. Having a boss who knows just enough about mechanical design to scrape by and who is also very difficult to talk to about anything. Having to work out the dirty details of a poorly thought out mechanism or system resulting from brainstorming with said individual. Especially when a better idea is pooed immediately with very little discussion or investigation into claimed matters... I'll leave it at that. Working on the next item and simultaneously making sure the last is put together correctly by the one guy in the shop, who will not always ask questions when unsure what to do... Yeah, just weld that anywhere.

3) Its a close call. I'd say in the long run no. But, I can use the machine shop including limited use of the cnc waterjet. Flexible hours (I'm in school this semester and work half time). Its a lot of on the job experience doing a large variety of things, but given the nature of the environment it will only cary me so far.

4) Not enough info for me to feel compelled to pick. I mean am I being forced into the act? Who is gentler? I guess my answer would be neither and I'd fight tooth and nail otherwise.

Unpaid Job:

1. Asst. Marketing Director/Accomodations Coordinator for the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic for Cancer Research and I'm in charge of the massive volunteer appreciation party after the event.

2. I help develop the marketing packets to send out to sponsors and celebrities. I am a contact for sponsors when we get closer to the event. I also take care of all the accomodations for the celebrities and sponsors in town for the event. Which means I find out when they're coming to town, book hotels, and I'm their contact during the weekend should anything go wrong. I'm like a negotiator at times when shit hits the fan. For the volunteer party I plan the whole event, find prizes and such to give away to the volunteers, and I find speakers. I also work with the Marketing Director to secure a sponsor for the volunteers.

3. The perks totally outweigh the no pay Awesome experience for an awesome cause. I want to do stuff like this for the rest of my life. One day I'd like to head up a foundation or something. My dream is to head up one that is sponsored by some professional sports team. We'll see how that works out.

C) Yes, You must make your own personal satisfaction. I work for a great Dept. Take pride in what you do. I know I have helped people in need. I know I have directly saved several lives. I can make U-turns where I damn well please when going to a call. I can carry a gun off duty damn near anywhere in the country. There are probably more perks but I cant think of them.

1) College lecturer (math, stats, etc)

2) > 2/3 of the students are lazy, unmotivated, and beg for marks ('help') all the time to such an extent, that it is embarassing. 90% of them come from upper-class families. Oh, and the vast majority are very very weak in math... so teaching them is pretty hard and frustrating. I am talking, they don't know how to add fractions and such. And I am supposed to teach them calculus and stats. Also, the college is literally in the middle of the desert, 35 km outside the city. Lastly, the marking of tests and exams -- that sucks.

C) Pay sucks, but 4 months off each year, and work 5 times a week, so pretty much yeah. One definite advantage: staying youthful, both physically and mentally.

1. I lecture college math courses, grade quizzes, and hold office hours for a combined 6-7 hours a week.

2. None of them, really. I don't make much, gross pay, but I don't spend much, either.

C. My pay works out to something like $50/hr and I get a free education. And I like teaching, too.

4. Probably you, if I absolutely had to choose. I've never seen Big Business but you don't seem like a bad lookin' guy (no homo.) I get to be pitcher, though.

2) Sometimes I lose faith in what I'm doing, I feel like some of the things I enforce are out dated, and need change, but change takes forEVER. I also feel like there is a lot of misunderstanding about what I do, but it is not easy to change people's mind once an opinion is formed. Other things that bother me is that there is a lot of room for interpretation in this job and I feel like there is a lack of consistency that I find very frustrating. Plus some of the people that I work with are just jerks.
3) It's a good job with great benefits and good pay. Plus I don't have to worry about losing my job in a time when things are uncertain. I generally make my own schedule and work independently for the most part.

3)To some degree. Job security is better than private sector, which is important right now. Co-workers are good people. Most of the time it's low stress. I'm not micromanaged (quite the contrary, my supervisor works in a different building than me.) Some of the longer-range planning/projects are quite interesting, and occasionally I get a challenge or a learning opportunity when something goes wrong. I doubt I'll be here forever, more money would be nice once the economy rebounds (however long that takes) and I don't want to be in IT all my life but I'm by no means miserable.
