for the better part of the past month there has been a star/planet object just below and off to the side of the moon. what is it?

I was told Venus, but I will rely on the expertise of TWW just to be safe.

venus

venus is always the brightest non-twinkling celestial object in the night sky (other than the moon of course).

Last I heard was that we are going to have a cosmic collision with some debris from the Kipper Belt.

It's been moving a good deal in relation to both the earth and the moon: safe bet it's a planet.

Venus, duh.

Earlier this fall, you also saw another planet near it, which was jupiter, altho it wasn't as bright as venus. Around New Years, right after sunset, you could also see Mercury near the horizon and near Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon. It was pretty awesome
