Now as a hunter it kind of annoys me when people say this. But a friend the other day had a reason that gave me a little chuckle. She said part of the qualification to be a sport is all participants know they are involved. The deer just wakes up for the day to do deer things and ends up getting shot.

I still think hunting is a sport but her reasoning was at least creative. Which also leads me to believe she probably stole the line from someone because she is not a very creative person.

i know that they call hunters sportsmen and such, but you really can't make an argument that hunting is a sport of any kind.

playing halo is more of a sport than hunting.

you don't appear to have made an argument of any kind that it is not a sport.

i could almost qualify bow hunting almost as a sport. hunting with any sort of gun is not in any way a spot. sitting still, pointing in the right direction and pulling a trigger.. hardly a sport

any sport where a 70 year old man can "win" isnt a "real sport"

this includes such things as bowling, golf, hunting, and NASCAR (old men cant win Indy car races)

you cant really deny that you need sharper reflexes for open wheel racing than you do in nascar, where you do have 60+ year old drivers winning races

^^i guess i thought mark martin was as old as he looks, he's only 50???? and yeah old guys dont really win golf tourneys, but come on, golf isnt a "real sport" like basketball or boxing...when fat ass john daly can win a tournament, or 50 year old mark martin can beat a bunch of "athletes" in their 20s...in NASCAR, the cars are the athletes

so one definition says it has to involve skill AND physical exertion, the other says it has to involve skill OR physical prowess.

if we go with or... many things could become sports.

such as essay writing, taking the SAT, having sex, etc, as long as they are done competitively in a group.

if you don't like hunting, then don't do it

if you do like hunting, then go hunting when it's 'in season'

Um, duh.
...to establish a new and different "objective standard"
Why would you think such a discourse is pointless?

Quote :
"I try not to let the dictionary do my thinking for me"
Exactly.

Quote :
"what's the problem?"
No problem. Why does there have to be a problem?
People are simply discussing the issue of whether or not hunting is a "sport"....

Quote :
"i think the problem is murdering innocent animals to prove that you are not a faggot."
While I agree that hunters of that variety are a problem, certainly not all hunters are like that.

its the same things as when one talks about a 'sporting' chance. When SPORT hunting, rather than commercial game gathering, you have restricted seasons, and MANY restrictions on how and when you may TRY to take an animal during that season. These limits exists above and beyond the daily and season bag limits, and are in place to make it more INTERESTING, and to require more SKILL.
'Sporting' clays, and hunting as a sport existed LONG before 90% or mroe fo the so called 'sorts' most people list.

Maybe if one were to look at the fact that hunting is a event where one goes tot he woods, or field, or lake, or swamp, or river, and hunts GAME animals, and may or may NOT actually kill anything.
And the fact that for the best of us, while we ENJOY the hell out of wild game well cooked or grilled, the fun is int he chase. If i just wanted deer, i would get some, raise them, and pop them in the head with a mallet when i wanted deer. I want to go sit in the woods, set scent lures, and enjoy the fact that I never know if I will see a deer or not. Hell, nothing like going out for geese the day after duck season and seeing thousands of ducks. That after a week of duck hunts had yielded maybe 2-3 ducks per hunter for the week, with them ignoring the decoy spreads.

Its a pastime I enjoy, its a hobby, and by LONG standing definition, its a SPORT. We compete not against 'poor little animals', but against each other. Who can get that big buck for the year with 1 well aimed shot? who can fill a freezer with low cost meat, low fat, fine grained, while still getting to spend weekends in the woods with friends?

Sometimes it's a competition of which duck hunter in the blind or dove hunter in a field hits their limit first. I enjoy shooting sporting clays with my dad for the same reason.

football, baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, rugby, tennis, etc

how did you manage to lump baseball in with those other sports? I exert more athletic ability climbing into a duck blind with chest waders on than many baseball players do.
