I've pondered about running a single battery for simplicity, something like a group 31 (they seem to have the highest CCA/reserve capacity ratings). The stock replacement application is for (2) OE group 27's (or 2 34/78's Optima Red Tops). They are ~750 CCA each. Bear in mind that whatever I go with will be mounted in the bed, at some time in the future.
I've done some limited searching, but I've never seen anything more than 900CCA for a single battery (31a optima yellow top) - are there any out there that have more? Could I go with a deep cycle, and get away with it?
I'm use to the truck being a slow starter, and there's no electrical accessories (barring a possible electric lift pump in the future).
EDIT:
just read that the SUPERDODEMS came with a single group 31 battery from the factory. So what's everyone's brand/model preference

The first-gens did come with a single group 31 battery.
And you can get the 31 in a higher capacity...to the tune of almost 1100CCAs. check out Carquest for a 31HDP-30. I dunno just how much it'll set you back, but definitely cheaper than a damn Optima.
Carquest batteries are made by East Penn, same folks that make Deka. Good batteries. 2/11/2009 11:30:47 AM |

Money is a lesser concern as long as the battery lasts for a few years. this is good, because I can now move forward with the relocation to the bed. Going to use welding lead too . 2/11/2009 11:53:52 AM |

get an agm 8d tractor battery and be done with it, they are only like $600, dont have acid to run out, and have about 1500cca
[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 9:00 PM. Reason : ^ that one is lead acid, but illustrates the size]

damn, i'm glad i looked in this thread. i was looking at some permanent magnet generators for a MAE 496 project and one had the option of 32v output and i was like "wtf runs a 32v system???"
thanks 69 2/11/2009 9:07:34 PM |

not totally, I'm going to redo/move the main harness, but i also needed the space and weight distribution
(not that 60# on a 5000# vehicle is much)
but i am saving 28# going from 2 batts to 1. 3/19/2009 1:26:29 PM |

yeah, adding weight is necessary sometimes unfortunately. i'm sure the extra power will more than make up for it though. i've been poking/picking at my c5 to get enough weight off it to hopefully offset the cage that's coming soon.
any idea how much you dropped with the backhalf? have you weighed it since? 3/19/2009 6:07:58 PM |
Hurley Suspended 7284 Posts user info edit post |
no, but, judging from our "engineering sense" of weight, I'm going to say ~500-600#, putting me near 5k....but then those dubs added at least 100#, and my fuel cell cover will weigh ~60# when finished. I would bet im close to 5200# more or less. gotta get to the weigh station
on another note, I have just learned that I've been running off of 1 750CCA battery since ive owned this thing, the other battery is dead as shit (but still reads ~12V with the multimeter) 3/19/2009 7:51:27 PM |

yeah, and you can multiply that by 3 since it's rotational mass.
what's the reasoning behind the enclosure for the fuel cell/battery? why not just a regular aluminum/plastic battery box and leave the cell open?

daw shit, i remember that now
>the weather has taken a toll on the cell, being that it sits in the weather 100% of the time it has warped, and rain makes a puddle around the fuel cap. The cover is free (work perk), and I feel like it's worth the extra protection, versus purchasing a new cell...assuming it degrades to the point of needed replacement if left untouched
