Jaybee's thread got me thinking about this

I think "conference pride" is one of the stupidest concepts in sports most of the time.

Sure I'll cheer for Georgia Tech to beat Ohio State or something like that every now and then, or pull for us to win the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, but some people take it way too far.

For example, if Duke or UNC is in the NCAA Finals, I will NEVER pull for them to win. Some people will say "come on man lets go ACC!" but fuck that. Why would anybody ever want one of their rivals, schools that they're recruiting and competing with always, to get extra championships that you don't have? Why would you want their fans to talk shit and brag, their recruiting to stay elite, etc?

I think the Big East is the best bball conference in the country this year. The ACC is great too, but I don't have a problem admitting that IN MY OPINION the Big Least is better this year.

I definitely don't cheer for any duke or UNC in any game, but I could see how maybe the better they are, the more players want to come play against them maybe. I'm sure it benefits them more than the conference though.

I am not disagreeing with you... bowl games and OOC games are WAY overrated as a measuring stick. You have to look at the whole body of work... but other people dont see it that way so you want to shut them up by being better at everything, including bowl games/national championship games

It might have something to do with football vs. bball as well... because if a team from your conference is in the NC game in football then there is a good chance that they are better than you. They probably beat you head to head or they wouldnt be in the NC game to begin with, or at least split with you when they beat you in the conference championship game. So even if they lost in the NC game its not like you can talk shit without sounding like an idiot.

Whereas in bball, its much more about teams getting hot at the right time (March), seeding, matchups in the tourny etc. So its not as clear cut as to who the better team is...

I have been to many SEC/OOC games where the winning team didnt chant their name or mascot, but instead chanted SEC!


and its not so much regular games as it is the NC game. I loved seeing that directional Louisiana team beat Bama a few years back, but once it gets to the point of the NC game, I would rather see the conference represented well because like I said, its obvious the SEC team playing in the game is better than my team so I gain nothing from them losing.

In basketball I don't want any ACC team winning the national championship if it can't be us. Until we get back to winning championships, I can't root for teams (well maybe Wake) that we recruit against to win it all (especially since it's usually Duke and UNC). I can root for ACC teams to make the championship game (besides the two blues). If an ACC team does win it all though, I can and will use it in arguments about conference supremacy. I will root for ACC teams in OOC play beside the two blues, BC, and Maryland. Some exceptions will be made for BC, Maryland, and Duke. No exceptions are ever made for UNC.

In football I do want the following ACC teams, Clemson, VT, FSU, GT, UVA, and Miami to win the national championship. Besides UVA, the others already have way more football tradition than us, and excluding GT and UVA, they are usually recruiting at a higher level than us to begin with, so I don't mind pulling for them. I won't root for Duke, Wake, Maryland, BC, and UNC to win the national championship. I will root for Duke and Wake to win any bowl games they are in. Depending on who they are playing I might root for Maryland and BC. I will never root for UNC to win a bowl game.

Ive tried to do the conference pride thing in big games/championships games/etc.. But the older I get the more asshole dook/unc-ch/etc fans I run into on a daily basis and it makes me pull against them no matter who they play, no matter what fans of other conferences say about who the best conference is and so on. Basically.. I only have to listen to a SEC/Big 10/etc fan once or twice a year.. I live/work and see on a daily basis dook/unc-ch fans. I am sick and fucking tired of the goddamn fans and they MAKE me pull against them 99.9999% of the time. The only time I will pull for them is if it directly helps NCSU.
