My employer currently uses this website as a message board: http://eslwell.com/
Let's ignore the fact it's buggier than TWW for a moment The guy who maintains the site is going to shut it down because he doesn't want it clogging his server anymore. I've been put in charge of finding a new free site to use that isn't blocked by the network.
Now wolfpackgrrr, why wouldn't your employer just unblock the site you move the message board to? Because that would make sense and nothing my employer does in regards to computers makes sense.
Sites I cannot use: Facebook Linkedin Wordpress Blogspot Yahoo!Groups Livejournal
It would also be nice if it had an event creation system like this: http://otsu.eslwell.com/events/2009/02/clothing-swap
but at this point I'll try just about anything. Does anyone have a suggestion of a site I should try?

^^ The site that is getting shut down was internet, sort of. Basically they don't want to have to pay anyone to do what they want done
^ The idiot IT department has it blocked for some reason and refuses to put it on the list of unblocked sites. I'm not sure that IT has any actual training in computers. Awhile back they banned USB drives because they said that was the reason we were getting viruses on the network. When someone pointed out the reason we were getting viruses was most likely because there was no anti-virus software installed on the office computers they got pissed.

Did they think about making IT create it with some open source software?
Doesn't sound like they're concerned with ethics, so they shouldn't be too resistant to the idea.

Would setting up an internal Wiki be out of the question? MediaWiki is pretty easy to maintain and familiar to a lot of people. 4/9/2009 2:24:49 PM |

jesus what is it with you n00bs and fucking phpbb?
that shit is awful.
as far as the OP is concerned: tell your IT people to buy a fucking clue and host this sort of thing internally. the risk management is much simpler when you own your own content.
when they do have one, suggest that they use Zimbra Open Source edition. it's not the best, but they sound clueless, so it'd be easy enough to manage for them
